Siegen

Art and history in Siegen

For centuries, the Upper Castle was the residence of the rulers of Nassau. Since 1905, it has housed the Siegerland Museum of Art and Regional History. The economic history collection includes evidence of the region’s mining and ironworking traditions. Portraits of the ruling family are on display in the Upper Castle’s Oranier Hall. The Rubens Gallery contains nine original paintings by Peter Paul Rubens.

A different focus awaits at the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen, an internationally oriented art museum that opened in 2001. The Municipal Gallery at Haus Seel introduces visitors to the regional art scene and presents up to eleven temporary exhibitions a year. As the exhibition program may change, check which exhibition is currently on view before visiting. This makes it possible to plan museum visits around your particular interests in art, rather than treating both venues as offering the same experience.

Mining and Siegen’s history

The Hainer Tunnel extends about 720 meters beneath Siegberg. At the show mine, expert-guided tours bring the history of mining to life. These two topics offer different ways to explore the region’s past: the Siegerland Museum covers mining and ironworking as part of economic history, while the tours at the show mine focus on the history of mining.

The “Around the Krönchen” tour brings nearly 900 years of Siegen’s history to life on a walk through the historic city center. Highlights include a visit to the historic princely crypt in the Lower Castle. Another way to explore the city’s history is the children’s rally “A Mine at a Dizzying Height”: puzzles reveal 800 years of Siegen’s history, and the rally takes about two hours. Dates, access and booking conditions for tours and activities may vary. Check the latest information before your visit; for the rally, this also applies to group bookings.

Castle park and walking trails

A walk through the surrounding castle park offers further insights into Siegen’s history. Its wide variety of plants makes it a worthwhile destination in every season. In the Historic Wildlife Park, three circular trails pass old trees, the Hermelsbach stream and activity stations. This gives you different ways to enjoy the outdoors: a walk framed by the plants and history of the castle park, or a route past the trees, stream and stations in the wildlife park. Conditions on the trails may change; check them before setting out.

Finding your way on arrival

From Siegen Central Station, the walking route to the Upper Town follows Bahnhofstraße, Kölner Tor and Kölner Straße. These street names provide a specific guide to the route from the station to the Upper Town. As walking routes may change, it’s a good idea to check the current route before you arrive.

Take this focus into account when making your choice, and check the details of the specific hotels you are considering for your trip.
