Discover Ibbenbüren: Cliffs, Lake Aasee and mining history
Accommodation in Ibbenbüren
There are many ways to discover Ibbenbüren: the Dörenther Cliffs and Lake Aasee represent the area’s landscape and outdoor activities, while museums, historic buildings and a mining-themed trail explore the town’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, these different highlights can help you plan your stay—with activities such as hiking, cycling, water sports or exploring the local culture.
Dörenther Cliffs: Sandstone and hiking trails
The Dörenther Cliffs lie south of Ibbenbüren, on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The rock formation stretches for about four kilometres, and its sandstone towers reach heights of up to 20 metres. Numerous hiking trails run along the cliffs and lead into the adjoining Teutoburg Forest. From there, you can enjoy views across the southern Münsterland region.
The Teutoschleife Dörenther Klippen trail starts and ends at the Dörenther Klippen car park in Ibbenbüren. Check route conditions before setting out. Climbing is restricted to designated areas and takes place as part of courses run by Bergfreunde Ibbenbüren e.V. or VHS Ibbenbüren. You should also check the course offering and climbing rules before visiting.
Walk, sail and cycle around Lake Aasee
For a walk, there is a 2.7-kilometre loop around Ibbenbüren’s Lake Aasee. The lake also offers opportunities for sailing and other water activities, and there is a beach club with a sandy beach. On land, you’ll find a skate park, a dirt-bike facility and several children’s playgrounds. These facilities may change, so check local information if one of them is important for your visit.
The area around Lake Aasee is freely accessible year-round, subject to temporary local restrictions. By car, you can reach the lake via the Ibbenbüren exit on the A30. It is about 1.3 kilometres on foot from Ibbenbüren railway station. This gives you both a road route and a walking route from the station as options for getting there.
Cycling routes around Ibbenbüren
The Töddenland cycle route is a 122-kilometre circular route through the historic Töddenland region and passes through Ibbenbüren. One section runs along Lake Aasee; the route also passes close to the Teutoburg Forest and the Schafberg plateau. Public transport connections are available at the stations of Ibbenbüren-Laggenbeck, Ibbenbüren and Ibbenbüren-Esch in Püsselbüren. Check the timetables before your trip.
Ibbenbüren is also connected to the Dortmund-Ems Canal Route and the Töddenland cycle route. If you’re planning a cycling trip, it’s a good idea to check the current signage and route details before setting off.
Amusement park with a toboggan run and fairy-tale forest
The Sommerrodelbahn amusement park in Ibbenbüren has a 100-metre-long, track-guided toboggan run. The park also has a fairy-tale forest featuring twelve stories by the Brothers Grimm, water features and dwarf houses. The play area covers 1,500 square metres. The toboggan run, fairy-tale forest and play area each offer a different kind of fun.
Townscape and history
Half-timbered houses and Ibbenbüren sandstone shape the town centre, which is considered lively and is a good place for a stroll or some shopping. Guided town tours highlight buildings of cultural and historical importance, including restored half-timbered houses. Some of the buildings can be visited.
The Ibbenbüren Town Museum covers the town’s history, from early settlement to its development into a medium-sized town, and occasionally hosts special exhibitions. The Christuskirche is another historic landmark: construction of the present-day church began in 1523. The ruins of the Heidenturm, associated with Ibbenbüren Castle, lie near Lake Aasee.
The themed “Glück auf!” hike follows historic traces of mining. The Mining Museum documents Ibbenbüren’s coal-mining heritage with machinery, tools and equipment for underground mine construction, as well as miners’ documents, mine plans, minerals and fossils. On 16 August 2026, the museum was temporarily closed while a new concept and location were being developed. Check its current status before visiting.
