Lienen: Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Lienen
In Lienen, you can choose from hiking, nature experiences and cultural attractions for your stay. The options vary in length and theme, giving you concrete starting points for planning.
Hiking between the valley and the ridge
The Teutoschleife Holperdorper is a 13-kilometre circular trail that leads from Lienen through colourful meadows and expansive forests. It is one of eight Teutoschleifen trails in the Tecklenburger Land region. The Hermannsweg offers a different scale: The route runs for 156 kilometres from Rheine to Velmerstot; its section in Lienen crosses Westerbecker Berg, the highest point in the MĂĽnsterland region. This lets you compare a single loop with a section of a much longer long-distance trail.
The Lienener Osning nature reserve, with the ridges of the Teutoburg Forest, invites you to walk and hike year-round along both routes. Holperdorper Tal lies in the northern part of Lienen. There, the Duvensteine are a striking rock formation on the border with Lower Saxony; access on foot may be restricted by vegetation. A viewing platform at the hiking car park on Zum Steinbruch road offers views of the quarry and the MĂĽnsterland park landscape.
Culture and other experiences
The Romanesque tower of the Protestant Church in Lienen dates from a 12th-century building and is the oldest still-visible part of the church. The 3.5-kilometre digital tour “Historic Lienen” also starts at the church. In the free “Future History” app, it combines historical and current images, audio, text and augmented reality. You can use it on your smartphone via the app or as a web version.
BARFUSS-PARK Lienen offers a different focus: Its 1 kilometre of paths provides a sensory nature experience with wood, stones, bark mulch, grass, clay and water. Lienen’s indoor and outdoor swimming pool adds another option: The indoor pool has 200 m² of water surface.
The Eisenbahntradition association offers rides on historic trains from Lienen station, including steam locomotives and carriages. If you plan to take one of these rides, check the available dates in advance.
Cycling and getting your bearings
The northern loop of the 100 Castles Route is 35 kilometres long and can be started in Lienen at the Haus des Gastes or at Kattenvenne station. The Lienen Tourist Information Office is in the Haus des Gastes, right by the village pond in the town centre. If you choose to start at the Haus des Gastes, the Tourist Information Office is therefore at the same named location.
A regional perspective: Steinfurt
The district of Steinfurt is a diverse holiday region with parkland, manor houses, moated castles, monasteries and castles. The twelve NaTourismus routes run through almost all the towns in the Steinfurt and Tecklenburger Land regions, are between 25 and 54 kilometres long, and are ideal for discovering the area’s diverse flora and fauna. This regional perspective complements Lienen’s specific trails and attractions with further nature and culture themes across the district.
