Discover Bergkamen
Accommodation in Bergkamen
Bergkamen brings together several different themes for day trips: hiking and cycling trails, the Großes Holz mining spoil tip, the Roman Park, Marina Rünthe and Beversee. When planning your stay, you can choose whether you’d rather spend time outdoors, explore Roman history or focus on the water.
Hiking trails, views and art
Bergkamen has a cycling and hiking network covering around 100 kilometres. The Großes Holz mining spoil tip covers 140 hectares and offers more than 40 kilometres of hiking trails. These figures refer to different areas: around 100 kilometres applies to the network in Bergkamen, while more than 40 kilometres refers to the hiking trails on the spoil tip. From Adener Höhe, the views extend across the Münsterland, the Sauerland, and the eastern and western Ruhr region. The summit of the Großes Holz mining spoil tip is also home to IMPULS Bergkamen, a light art installation by Maik and Dirk Löbbert. This site therefore brings together a sweeping panorama and a specific work of art.
There is also a named destination for cyclists: in Bergkamen, the Römer-Lippe Route leads to Marina Rünthe and the Roman Park in Bergkamen. The route description thus links two destinations with different focuses—water sports and Roman history. The route provides another point of reference alongside the citywide cycling and hiking network.
Roman Park and Roman history
The Roman Park in Bergkamen features a Roman timber-and-earth rampart rebuilt using original plans. The Archaeological Trail provides information about life in the camp. History enthusiasts will find both an example of Roman construction and a themed introduction to life in the camp.
The Roman Park offers guided tours, museum education programmes and children’s holiday activities for school classes, families and adult groups. Which programmes are available depends on the current visitor programme. So check before your trip which activities are scheduled during your visit.
Marina Rünthe and Beversee
The Westphalian Marina Rünthe sports boat centre is one of the largest marinas in North Rhine-Westphalia and has more than 300 sports boats. This gives the destination a different focus from the hiking trails and the Roman Park. At Beversee, you can hike along the Route of Industrial Nature and take bat-watching tours. The Beversee nature reserve in Bergkamen is connected to the Route of Industrial Nature. So, in addition to the sports boat centre, nature and guided activities are also options to consider when planning your trip.
