Accommodation in Schwerte
During a stay in Schwerte, you can choose from a range of themes: church art, industrial heritage, seasonal events and woodland trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Schwerte, these interests can be a good starting point for planning your trip.
Church art and historic sites
St. Viktor Church is a three-aisled hall church dating from the 14th century. Its late Gothic high choir was begun in 1508. One of Schwerte’s outstanding sights is the Antwerp carved altar, installed in the church at Easter 1523. Visiting hours are listed as Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; check before your visit whether these hours are still in effect.
The Rohrmeisterei is also one of the city’s attractions and is recognised as a stop on the Route of Industrial Heritage. The history of the Schwerte railway repair works began in the 1870s. Schloss Haus Ruhr is a listed former moated castle and a complex of buildings. Its courtyard is home to a horse chestnut tree more than 200 years old, one of the oldest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Guided tours, events and Schwerte mustard
Guided city tours offer informative and entertaining insights into the sights, the city’s distinctive features and its people. During the darker months, a night watchman’s tour of Schwerte’s Old Town takes place every Thursday. Ask the organiser about current dates and practical details.
In August, Welttheater der StraĂźe presents a cultural programme featuring acrobatics, theatre and music throughout Schwerte. The event has been held since 1989 and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Check the current annual programme before planning your stay around it. At the annual Pannekaukenfest, numerous stalls serve Pannekauken in a variety of styles; there is also a large stage programme. Events are also held at Wuckenhof, including the BĂĽrger fĂĽr BĂĽrger Christmas Market, the Wuckenhof Wine Festival and Welttheater der StraĂźe. Check with the organisers for event dates.
One local speciality is Schwerte mustard: it is still made traditionally on historic millstones of Siberian granite, without additives. A wide range of different mustards is also made and sold in Schwerte. For travellers interested in regional products, this adds to the city’s cultural and historical appeal.
Woodland trails and cycle tours
The Schwerter Wald adventure trail invites visitors to explore the forest with all their senses at 20 activity stations. Adults and children can visit the stations. In Schwerter Wald, the FreischĂĽtz high ropes course offers twelve courses at different heights. As it is a seasonal attraction, check the current operating dates in advance.
Those who prefer to explore independently will find themed circular trails in Schwerte, which can be followed at their own pace with informational leaflets. After about 125 kilometres, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route passes through Schwerte, giving cyclists the chance to experience nature in the city. The leaflet-guided circular trails and the cycle route offer different ways to get around; the stated distances for the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route are approximate.
