Viersen combines art in a neoclassical villa with historic cultural sites and nature in the south of the city. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of highlights: temporary exhibitions and a municipal art collection, DĂĽlken traditions, or short circular walks in the Bockerter Heide. These destinations offer different reasons to explore Viersen.

Art at the Galerie im Park

The Städtische Galerie im Park is centrally located in the city center, in a white neoclassical villa dating from 1868. Each year, it presents six to seven temporary exhibitions, each running for several weeks. A visit therefore offers a different focus from the Graphische Sammlung of the city of Viersen, which is permanently housed there: its works include pieces by Otto Dix, Picasso, Warhol and Dürer. The architecture, exhibition program and collection offer several ways to explore art.

The gallery offers guided tours for school classes and groups; availability may depend on prior arrangements. If you are visiting as a group, allow for the possibility that arrangements may need to be made in advance.

The Festhalle and Dülken’s cultural sites

The Festhalle opened in 1913 as a gymnasium and festival hall and has been used exclusively for cultural purposes since 1925. Today, it remains part of Viersen’s cultural scene, hosting the annual World Billiards Championship. The two dates mark different stages: the building’s original use and its later cultural focus.

In DĂĽlken, the Catholic parish church of St. Cornelius is one of the few five-aisled churches on the Lower Rhine. Another historic attraction is the NarrenmĂĽhle, a landmark of DĂĽlken. The lower part of the mill houses a carnival museum. Every year on November 11, members of the Narrenakademie ride wooden hobby horses around the mill, marking the start of the DĂĽlken carnival season. The church, mill and tradition reflect different aspects of local culture.

Nature and short circular routes in the Bockerter Heide

The Bockerter Heide, covering around 169 hectares, is a nature reserve in the south of Viersen. Three short, marked circular hiking trails of up to three kilometers lead through the area. The distances and circular routes provide a practical guide for planning; check the signs and trail conditions on site. The hiking parking area can be reached via Hardter StraĂźe and Bockerter Busch.

Nature watching offers another focus. Bird species that can be observed here include nightingales, European turtle doves and tree pipits, which are listed as endangered species on the Red List. Sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed. The heath’s flora includes, among other plants, velvet grass, red foxglove, hawthorn, birch and black alder; when individual plants can be seen varies with the season.

The wider Viersen destination

The Viersen district, with its towns and municipalities and the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, is an important part of the Lower Rhine tourist region. For a regional perspective, the 122.8-kilometer BahnRadweg Kreis Viersen follows or runs alongside disused railway lines through wide-open fields and quiet forests, leading to the lake district of the Krickenbecker Seen.

The Viersen circular route also connects you with other destinations in the district. A good starting point is the boat landing on the Niers near Viersen-Süchteln; the route initially follows the Niers for several kilometers through the Saalbruch nature reserve. A detour leads to the viewpoint at Clörather Mühle. Another detour takes you to Dülken’s historic town center at cycling junction 40, with its history trail and Narrenmühle; the route also passes the parish church of St. Maria Hilfe der Christen in Dornbusch. Check current route conditions before setting out.
