The topics vary according to time of day, type of visit and mode of travel. If you plan to visit the wine shop or dine out, check the opening hours; if you are looking for culture, the monastery ruins and garden offer a focus of their own. For cyclists, the exact route is what matters.

Wine Sales and Dining

The Kloster Marienthal winery offers wine sales daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dining is also available there daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The two daily time slots start an hour apart and end at the same time. If you plan to enjoy both, bear in mind that dining starts later. Check the stated times before you arrive. From 2004 onward, the old ruins of Marienthal Monastery were converted into a modern winery with a wine bar. The winery is also a regular venue for cultural events.

Monastery History and Garden

The former Marienthal Augustinian convent is located in the cadastral district of Dernau. It was founded in 1136 and completely rebuilt in 1699. The former monastery at Klosterstraße 3 is a listed cultural monument. The Baroque terraced garden features a garden house dating from 1762. The former monastery also includes the ruins of a hall building, which probably date from the 17th century. The monastery ruins and garden invite visitors to pause and relax; events and concerts of all kinds are held there regularly. The monastery grounds thus bring together architectural history, a garden and a place to linger.

Cycle Route and Travel

The Ahr Cycle Route runs all the way to Marienthal. From the Marienthal section, it continues along the left bank of the Ahr, below the distinctive “Bunte Kuh” rock formation. The riverbank and rock formation provide clear landmarks along this section. As reconstruction and detours can change the route, check the current route before setting off.

The towns between Altenahr and Marienthal are easily accessible by public transport. Check current connections before travelling, as transport services may change. When travelling by public transport, check the latest connections; for a cycling trip, check the current route of the Ahr Cycle Route before setting off.

A Historical Attraction in the Ahr Valley

Another historical attraction in the Ahr Valley is the so-called Government Bunker on Silberberg. It is a preserved section of the former emergency seat of the constitutional bodies of the Federal Republic of Germany. At the documentation centre, visitors can see 203 metres of the former bunker complex, which was 17.3 kilometres long in total; 90-minute guided tours are offered. Thus, visitors can see a preserved section of the former complex, not its entire length. When planning your day, note the different durations: the winery’s daily opening hours and a 90-minute tour of the Government Bunker.
