Hoffeld combines a local history shaped by basalt quarrying with a historic village center featuring half-timbered houses. When planning your trip, two distinct themes are especially important: the village museum focuses on rural life in the past, while hiking and mountain biking offer different types of tours. Hoffeld Lake is part of the area’s history, but it is fenced off and not open to the public.

Basalt Landscape and Local History

Hoffeld lies at the eastern foot of the 500 m-high Burgkopf. A basalt quarry was once located there. When quarrying ended in 1981, the former quarry became a lake. It is leased to and used by the Hoffeld fishing club. Hoffeld Lake is fenced off and not open to the public. Information boards in the former winch house of the old quarry explain the history of the village and the quarry. Check the condition of the boards on site.

Half-Timbered Houses, Village Museum and Chapel

The historic village center is known for its many well-preserved half-timbered houses. One of these buildings houses the Hoffeld Village Museum. Its exhibition explains the cramped living conditions of earlier generations and explores the everyday life of rural residents in Eifel villages. The house served as the home of a large family for many years, until it was acquired by the municipality in the 1980s. Two perspectives are presented side by side: the history of one family home and the broader theme of rural life.

A fountain made of Hoffeld basalt columns stands in front of the museum and helps shape the village’s appearance. Basalt is thus featured both in the history of the quarry and as a design element in the village center. As of September 2025, the Hoffeld Village Museum had no regular opening hours; check access arrangements before visiting. The Dorfmuseum Hoffeld bus stop is 50 meters from the museum. Check current bus services before travelling.

The St. Donatus Chapel in Hoffeld also brings together different periods: it was built in 1975, while its altar dates from the 18th century. The altar is therefore older than the chapel building. A land grant by Emperor Lothair I in 855 included land in Hoffeld and Barweiler. The annual fair is celebrated on October 20 in Kirmutscheid and its ecclesiastical affiliates, including Hoffeld. The specific details of the event may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around the fair, check the event details in advance.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

For a hike, consider the nearby Nohn route “Around Mordhügel”: it is a moderately difficult 13-kilometer circular hike with a duration of 3 hours and 20 minutes. This makes it easy to factor the time required into your day’s plans. The route guide was updated on April 25, 2024; check trail conditions before setting out.

A difficult mountain bike route starts and ends at the Feye Haus in Hoffeld. It passes Hoffeld’s basalt lake and crosses the landscape of the High Eifel to the Dreimühlen Waterfall and the ruins of Nürburg. The options differ: one is a moderately difficult circular hike with a stated duration, and the other is a difficult mountain bike tour that returns to its starting point. Differences in activity and difficulty can help you weigh which type of tour best suits your trip plans.
