Mayschoß: Vineyards, Hiking Trails and Saffenburg

Hiking Trails and Views

The Altenahr–Mayschoß section of the Red Wine Hiking Trail is about four kilometers long and moderately difficult. From the Ümerich viewpoint, you can see Mayschoß, Are Castle and the Ahr Valley. The Great Saffenburg Loop also leads to several viewpoints: it includes Saffenburg Castle, Schwedenkopf, Ümerich and Mohrenkopf. This gives you the choice of a route with a stated distance and difficulty level or a loop with four named viewpoints when planning your trip.

The Ahr Cycle Path, the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Eifelsteig pass directly by Mayschoß. Check the current route if weather or infrastructure conditions have changed. The path to Ümerich has rocky sections and requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear. Take these requirements into account when planning your hike and check trail conditions before setting out.

Saffenburg Castle: History and Views

Saffenburg Castle is considered the oldest castle ruin in the region and is recognized as a cultural monument under Rhineland-Palatinate’s heritage protection law. It was destroyed in 1704; restoration of its remaining foundations began in 2004. In 2020, the panorama from Saffenburg Castle was named the Ahr’s “Most Beautiful Vineyard View.” From the castle plateau, the view stretches across Mayschoß, the Ahr bend, steep vineyard terraces and the Mönchberg vineyard.

From Mayschoß railway station, the route to Saffenburg Castle follows the Ahrtalweg A1. Check local trail conditions before setting out. If you are interested in the castle, this route combines the site’s historical significance and the surrounding viewpoints with a specific hiking trail.

Wine Tastings, Regional Cuisine and Festivals

At the Mayschoß vinotheque, you can attend regular wine tastings and cellar tours without booking in advance. As the operator’s arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions before your trip. Mayschoß wine taverns and seasonal wine taverns serve regional dishes with Ahr wines. Regional snack platters with sausage, cheese, pickled vegetables, grape jelly and bread are also recommended as an accompaniment to wine tastings. Ask each establishment about its current offerings.

Mayschoß celebrates a Wine Blossom Festival in mid-May and a Wine Festival from late September to the end of October. Check the exact event dates before your trip. If a celebration is the reason for your stay, the grounds of Saffenburg Castle may also be an option as a venue: they can be rented for family celebrations and corporate events.
