Oberwinter combines a town center on the Rhine with rail connections, historic churches, hiking trails, cycling routes along the Rhine, and a marina. To plan your stay, you can first choose what interests you most: half-timbered houses, architectural history, a scenic trail, or finding your bearings on the water? The following sections organize the options by travel, townscape, and activities.

Getting Here by Train

Oberwinter is on the Cologne–Koblenz rail line, but only local trains stop at the station. If you are traveling by ICE or IC, you will need to change in Bonn or Remagen. The onward journey from either of these stations to Oberwinter takes only a few minutes. The type of train is therefore an important factor when planning your trip: local trains stop in Oberwinter, while long-distance services require a change at one of the two locations mentioned. Check the timetable and your planned connection for your travel date.

Townscape and Architectural History

The town center on the Rhine consists largely of well-maintained half-timbered houses. Two churches, with distinct architectural styles and dates of origin, also reflect the town’s architectural history. St. Laurentius was built as a Romanesque country church as early as the 11th century. The Evangelical Church was built in 1723 in a courtyard and is a Baroque courtyard church. On its exterior, a sandstone portal features floral relief patterns, Greek columns, and angels. The churches’ construction dates and architectural forms, along with the portal’s design, offer concrete points of comparison between their distinct architectural accents.

Art and Local History

Another cultural landmark is the sculpture “Regenfänger” by artist Eberhard Bosslet. It stands on Oberwinter’s harbor jetty. Bosslet created it in 2001 from construction equipment. The artist, year of creation, and material give the work a distinct connection to its origins, setting it apart from the architectural history of the churches. Oberwinter thus offers both historic architecture and a sculpture made from a specifically identified material.

Hiking and Cycling

Oberwinter lies directly on the RheinBurgenWeg, which runs from nearby Rolandsbogen to Mäuseturm near Bingen. The literary hiking trail L3, “Humboldtweg,” has a more specific starting point and viewpoint: it begins at a parking lot on the B9 right next to Oberwinter Marina and leads to the Friedrichsberg viewpoint, which overlooks Oberwinter. The RheinBurgenWeg runs from Rolandsbogen to Mäuseturm near Bingen; the Humboldtweg links its starting point next to the marina with views of Oberwinter from Friedrichsberg.

From Oberwinter, you can cycle along the Rhine to Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Remagen, or Sinzig. Cycling takes you along the Rhine to these places; for hiking, the RheinBurgenWeg leads to Mäuseturm near Bingen, while the Humboldtweg leads to Friedrichsberg, which overlooks Oberwinter.

Oberwinter Marina

Oberwinter Marina is located at Rhine kilometer 639 and has room for boats up to 34 meters long. Yachts passing through can also find berths and anchorages there.
