Village Character and Historical Connections

Restored village chapels and the renaturalized Schalkenbach contribute to the character of Schalkenbach. The Vinxtbach is also part of the area’s historical context: it was the boundary between Upper Germania and Lower Germania. If you would like to explore Schalkenbach on foot, you will find marked trails with different themes. They lead to named destinations and offer insights into juniper heaths, historical woodland use and traces passed down through the ages. When planning, you can decide whether you are especially interested in the landscape, local history or themed trail stops.

The Köhler and Lohe Trail

Marked trails lead to the Maisbusch forest chapel and the charcoal kiln. The Köhler and Lohe Trail starts at the Maisbüsch Chapel in Unter-Vinxt, crosses the Schalkenbach and continues to Waldgut Schirmau and the wooden Weiselstein observation tower in the protected juniper heath area. As a themed trail, it focuses on juniper heaths and historical woodland use. Information boards along the trail explain how juniper heaths came about and what the former Lohe economy involved. The trail thus brings together the formation of a landscape type and the history of its use. Stops include a charcoal kiln and a bloomery furnace near the fire station above Mittel-Vinxt. In the Ramersbacher Gehölz, the trail passes round depressions identified as traces of Celtic mining.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Eifelleiter Premium Loop Trail in the Vinxtbach Valley is 15.8 kilometers long, with Schalkenbach listed as a starting point. The loop passes Waldgut Schirmau through a heathland landscape. The Weiselstein observation tower is the highlight of this heathland landscape. The Vinxtbachtal Trail runs through alternating fields, meadows, forests and forest edges; expansive views are also part of its landscape. When choosing a trail, you can compare the themes and historical stops of the Köhler and Lohe Trail with the Eifelleiter’s specified length. This puts different points of interest in focus: juniper heath and woodland use on one trail, and a loop with a stated distance and changing landscape sections on the other.
