Malberg lies in a basin formed by the Kyll. Wooded slopes surround the village and contribute to a comparatively mild climate. Malberg Castle stands on a rocky spur above the Kyll. Visitors choosing Malberg as a destination can focus their stay on the castle’s history, its gardens or the landscape along the Castle Route.

Malberg Castle and Its Construction Phases

The medieval castle of Malberg has not survived. The present old castle building probably dates from around 1580 and is classified as a 16th-century structure. The complex also includes an 18th-century palace and a gatehouse with a clock tower dating from 1709. These dates refer to different parts and construction phases of the complex, not to a single year of construction for the entire castle.

The Iron Garden and Ways to Visit

The Iron Garden at the castle is a French garden dating from 1713/14. Originally, it served both as a pleasure garden and as a kitchen garden, where vegetables and medicinal plants were grown. The garden therefore combines recreational use with practical cultivation. The castle gardens are open to visitors seasonally, and admission is free. The interiors can be visited only as part of guided tours. Check seasonal visiting options before your trip.

Churches and Other Historic Buildings

The Baroque castle church was completed in 1710 and features valuable interior furnishings. St. Quirin is a former Catholic parish church and castle church in Malberg. The Old Church was built in 1755 and used as a barn from 1833 onward. Other historic buildings include an ironworks dating from 1749 and a hop house built in the mid-19th century. These buildings add further local examples from different centuries to the history of the castle.

It follows the Kyll and passes red sandstone formations; herbs, meadows, hedges and woodland shape the landscape along the way.
