Obersteinebach combines a predominantly forested landscape with a stream, a natural monument and evidence of former iron ore mining. Local themes therefore range from nature and water to regional working history. When planning your stay, you can use these different focal points as a guide: natural sites, the landscape as a whole and historic traces each tell a different side of the place.

Forest, Water and a Natural Monument

Obersteinebach lies within the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. Around two-thirds of the local area is forested, and the surrounding area is also largely covered by forest. The Bildeiche oak is designated as a natural monument and lies in the forest between Obersteinebach and Peterslahr. The Lahrbach flows north through Obersteinebach and joins the Wied near Oberlahr. These two landscape details complement each other: the forest cover describes the area, while the Lahrbach’s northward course traces a specific route through the village to the Wied near Oberlahr. The Lahrbach Reservoir, with its Wallerstube fishing shelter, is also one of the local destinations for leisure and recreation.

GeoRoute and Getting Your Bearings

The GeoRoute Im Tal der alten Hütte is a circular hiking trail that runs through the Lahrer Herrlichkeit core zone of the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. One access point is at the village square by the village pond in Obersteinebach; free parking for the GeoRoute is available there. The route’s information points present more than 1,000 years of mining and iron-smelting history. Bus route 120 provides access to the GeoRoute area from Altenkirchen and Neuwied; passengers change to bus route 125 in Horhausen. To help you get your bearings, Obersteinebach is about five kilometres from the Neuwied/Altenkirchen exit on the A 3 and about 25 kilometres from the Rhine. The motorway exit provides a specific road reference, while the distance to the Rhine adds regional context. Check the latest information on bus connections, route access and parking before setting off, as these may change.

Mining and Local History

The oldest house in Obersteinebach dates from 1724. The mining pits and the adit behind the Heiderhof preserve evidence of iron ore mining from 400 to 500 years ago; the GeoRoute information points, by contrast, place mining and iron smelting within a history spanning more than 1,000 years. Here, concrete traces of ore extraction meet the broader historical perspective conveyed by the route.

More Themes in the Altenkirchen Destination

Elsewhere in the wider Altenkirchen destination, other places add further historical and spiritual themes. In 1849, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” (Flammersfeld Aid Association for Supporting Less Affluent Farmers) in Flammersfeld, the world’s first loan fund association. In Marienthal, the Klosterdorfweg trail leads around the former Franciscan monastery through the shaded spa forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Marienthal remains a popular pilgrimage site today. These examples complement Obersteinebach’s mining history with the history of associations in Flammersfeld and the pilgrimage tradition in Marienthal.
