Wissen combines trails along the Sieg with church art, industrial heritage and a variety of ways to explore the landscape. When planning your stay, it is worth first considering how much time you have and what kind of activity you are interested in: a guided tour of the town centre takes about two hours, while some hiking trails cover considerably longer distances.

You can walk along the river on the Sieg promenade year-round on an accessible route and watch grey herons. During high water, route and access conditions may change temporarily, so check them before your walk. RegioBahnhof is designated as an award-winning hiking station and connects several hiking options with public transport. If you plan to arrive by train, check the current services.

Churches, chapels and local history

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is notable for its surviving murals, which are considered Peter Hecker’s largest surviving work of art. Its historic furnishings also include a 13th-century baptismal font, the oldest item in the church’s inventory.

A guided tour of the town centre takes about two hours and starts at the tourist information office in RegioBahnhof. Stops include kulturWERKwissen, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Marktstube, Steinbuschanlage, the directors’ villas, Germania Hotel and Gerichtsstraße. kulturWERKwissen now uses a former mining and industrial site for art and culture. Together with the religious and civic landmarks, these stops make for a tour that explores different aspects of Wissen’s history.

Schönstein Castle also combines history with a striking landscape setting: it stands on a rock at the confluence of the Elbbach and the Sieg and was first mentioned in a document in 1255. The castle is inhabited, and its interior cannot be visited. The castle chapel and Heister Chapel are accessible only as part of the guided Chapel Trail. Built in 1714, Heister Chapel is considered one of the oldest half-timbered chapels in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The guided Chapel Trail is about four kilometres long, takes around two and a half hours and also starts at the tourist information office in RegioBahnhof. It leads to Schönstein Castle, its castle chapel and Heister Chapel. These stated durations help you compare the guided options; check the latest booking details before making plans.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Natursteig Sieg, Stage 10, “Rund-um-Wissen,” is rated difficult and follows a circular route from Wissen station back to the station. The route is just under 25 kilometres long. Along the way, field, forest and meadow paths alternate; the trail passes idyllic stream valleys and offers far-reaching views. These details give you a clear idea of the distance and difficulty.

Other trails offer their own landscape highlights: the Auenlandweg passes through forests and meadows, follows the Firzelsbach and also takes paths above the Sieg. Along a hiking trail by the Köttingsbach, the tree trail introduces 22 trees over a stretch of around 500 metres.

Starting in Wissen, the Nister-Flitzer Tour follows the Nister to the Weltendepfad and passes through the Kroppacher Schweiz, crossing a suspension bridge near Helmeroth. The Stille-Post cycling route, by contrast, follows a former mining railway line through an area shaped by historic iron ore mining. The two tours therefore differ mainly in the landscapes and historical themes described.

More ways to enjoy your stay
