Discover Alzey: Museums and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Alzey
For a trip to Alzey, museum collections, historic buildings, remains of medieval fortifications, and routes through the city center or vineyards offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Alzey, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Museum and Regional History
The Museum of the City of Alzey was founded in 1906 and is located in the former municipal hospital in the center. Its themes include Jewish history in the Alzey region and Volker von Alzey, the knightly singer of the Nibelungenlied. The Steinhalle, an off-site branch of the museum, houses significant Roman stone monuments from the city. These offer different ways to explore history, from regional stories to stone artifacts from Roman times.
Within the broader Alzey-Worms destination, the Museum of the City of Alzey also offers a regional perspective on prehistory and early history. The exhibition traces the cultural and historical development of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic to the Merovingian period and covers more than 6,000 years. Another exhibition is devoted to the geology and paleontology of the Mainz Basin. Minerals, especially fossils, illustrate its development over millions of years.
Buildings and Traces of the City's History
The former town hall stands on Fischmarkt. This Renaissance building dates from 1586 and was built with stones from Weidas Monastery. The building contains a carillon with a figure of Volker von Alzey. At Rossmarkt, the Rossmarkt Fountain and two decorative half-timbered houses shape the square; they date from the 17th and early 18th centuries. The two squares show in different ways how Alzey's history is reflected in its buildings and distinctive details.
Remains of the medieval city wall are preserved at Hexenbleiche. The Metzgerturm, probably the oldest tower in Alzey's fortifications, is also located there. The Wartbergturm is a historic landmark and serves as an observation tower. The current tower was rebuilt in 1989; it had previously been destroyed and rebuilt. Together, these sites offer different historical points of reference, without limiting the city's history to a single building.
City Walk and Art Trail
The City Walk for Everyone passes through the center of Alzey and takes in twelve sights. Eight of its stops are fully accessible to wheelchair users. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the information again before your trip. The Alzey Art and Culture Trail has a different focus: among the vines, it features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard houses. You should also check the route and access in advance.
The two routes differ mainly in their theme and setting: the city walk focuses on central sights, while the Art and Culture Trail takes in art and vineyard houses among the vineyards. For your trip to Alzey, you can choose between a walk with stops around the city and an art-focused route through the wine-growing landscape, without assuming a particular walking time or distance.
Swimming and Leisure
Wartbergbad has four solar-heated pools for sport and leisure. They include a 25-meter swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool with a 70-meter slide. Pool facilities and seasonal opening times may change. If the pool is an important part of your plans, check the current offerings before your visit.
