Bechtheim is an old wine village in a hollow, surrounded by vineyards. The village lies north of Worms and a few kilometres from the A61 and the Rhine. The wine landscape and local history offer different highlights for a stay: paths lead through the vineyards, while churches, fountains and traces of the wine trade offer insights into architectural history and former uses.

Wine Landscape and Trails

The Bechtheim wine trail is a signposted route through the vineyards. Along the way, there is information about grape varieties, historic farming equipment and vine planting. Rest areas and views across Bechtheim and the surrounding hill country are also part of the trail. The access point is at Steig, by the Warte.

On the Wonnegau section of the RheinTerrassenWeg, Bechtheim is a marked stop between Osthofen and Mettenheim. The stage links vineyards and views over the Rheinhessen hills and the Rhine plain with the Romanesque basilica and Bechtheim’s wines. Another route option is the Wundersame Wonnegau Tour, “The Secret of the Monk Benedict”: this approximately five-kilometre puzzle trail leads through vineyards and romantic lanes. If you are interested, check the tour’s current availability in advance.

The Kuhbrunnen is part of a signposted circular route and was once used to water livestock. After a ceremony, a procession led by the wine pilgrim heads into Bechtheim’s vineyards for a wine tasting. The sulphur spring is next to the barbecue area and flows with sulphurous water. Facilities on site may change.

Churches and Local History

The Romanesque Basilica of St. Lambert dates from the 11th century and was a pilgrimage church in the Middle Ages. It is considered one of the most significant Romanesque village churches in Rheinhessen. Its architectural features include a choir gallery, a barrel-vaulted crypt and 14th-century wall paintings. The Lambertus Fountain to the north and the Aegidius Fountain to the south of the basilica are connected to the underground pilgrims’ passage in the crypt.

Hof UexkĂĽll is an 18th-century residence south of the Catholic church; the year 1583 is engraved in its gateway. The 38-metre-high tower stands out at Bechtheim Protestant Church. The church was inaugurated in 1910 after 17 months of construction. Inside, the layout follows the Wiesbaden Programme: the altar, organ and pulpit are aligned along a single sightline.

The history of the Former Bechtheim Synagogue dates back to the laying of its foundation stone in 1855. In 1900, the local community acquired the building for use as a kindergarten; today, it continues to serve as a Protestant community centre. Its various uses are as much a part of local history as the religious buildings.

At the Fish Market and Press Stone, a 3,820-kilogram press stone is on display. It was found after a fire at the opposite Herrenhaus of Baron von der Leyen-Uexküll. The Waagehaus recalls its former function: grape carts and the “Wutz” were weighed there. Together with the trails through the vines, these features paint a picture of a place where viticulture shapes not only the landscape but is also reflected in historic buildings and objects.
