Osthofen Among Vineyards and Culture
Accommodation in Osthofen
Osthofen lies amid the vineyards and rolling hills of southern Rheinhessen. An extensive network of signposted trails connects the town with the surrounding region. Winemaking and hiking trails shape the landscape, while historical sites range from Bergkirche and FurtmĂĽhle to the local history museum and the Osthofen concentration camp memorial. When choosing a hotel in Osthofen, you can consider whether you would like to devote your days mainly to the vineyard landscape, outdoor activities or cultural history.
Winemaking and Wine Experiences
Grapevines have been cultivated in Osthofen for more than 1,300 years, and today there are more than two million vines. You can make wine a theme of your stay in different ways, such as taking a walk through the vineyards or visiting specifically to explore the region’s wine culture.
The bookable outdoor escape tour “In vino veritas” takes groups through the Osthofen area, where they solve puzzles, and includes a bottle of Wonnegau wine. Booking partners, availability and duration may change, so check the details before making plans.
Wineries offer casual visits with wine and a light snack. Depending on the winery, you can stop for a break in a courtyard, barn, cellar or tasting room. Visits are seasonal, and participating wineries may change. The wine shop at the shared tourist information office also offers wines and sparkling wines from the municipalities of the Wonnegau collective municipality; its selection may also change.
Explore the Vineyards on Foot
The 3.5-kilometre Weinbergschneckenweg is a self-guided walk through Osthofen’s vineyards. Along the way, it passes vineyard huts and information panels about grape varieties. The destination is Bergkirche, surrounded by old trees and historic graves. Check the route details before setting out.
For a longer route, there is the RheinTerrassenWeg, which runs above the Rhine between Worms and Mainz and is approximately 75 kilometres long. The trail offers wide-ranging views and points of interest along the way. The railway line running parallel to it makes shorter stages possible, with a return trip by train. By comparison, the 3.5-kilometre Weinbergschneckenweg is a much shorter, self-guided walk through the vineyards. If you plan to use train connections for your stages, check the current timetables before your trip.
Travelling by train is also a practical consideration: Osthofen station is centrally located on the Mainz–Mannheim line. From there, local sights can be reached on foot or by bicycle. You can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on routes through town or a hike in the vineyard landscape.
Bergkirche, Mill and Museum
At the end of the Weinbergschneckenweg, Bergkirche stands amid old trees and historic graves. Its present-day nave is Baroque. The organ gallery is decorated with biblical scenes painted by the Seekatz brothers in 1747. The trail thus combines views of the vineyards with a specific site from Osthofen’s history.
Furtmühle also tells the story of the town’s past: it is Osthofen’s oldest documented mill. Its richly ornamented Renaissance gateway is dated 1598. The local history museum focuses on crafts and technology. Its exhibits include a working forge, a threshing machine from the 1950s and tools from historical trades. Other exhibits explore industrialisation after the railway reached Osthofen in 1853.
Remembrance and Regional History
With its permanent exhibition, the Osthofen concentration camp memorial provides a comprehensive insight into persecution and resistance in Rhineland-Palatinate from 1933 to 1945. It also features a reading room for research into the Nazi era in the region, special exhibitions, lectures, seminars and cultural events. Additional information about the history of the camp is available outdoors. In Osthofen, alongside winemaking and architectural history, the history of National Socialism is also a central focus.
