Elmstein is a destination for travellers who want to include forests, regional history and outdoor trails in their trip. The town is part of the Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve and includes protected natural forest areas. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on: forest history, hiking, an active outing or an accessible circular trail. These themes can be explored at specific locations in Elmstein.

Forests and nature in Elmstein

Elmstein is considered to be about 95 percent forested. The forest offers opportunities for long hikes and forest bathing. If you plan to spend most of your stay outdoors, these provide two different ways to enjoy it: hiking on trails or forest bathing as a mindful way to engage with the forest. The protected natural forest areas are also part of the town’s natural character.

Forest history and crafts

The Alte Samenklenge is a museum dedicated to forest and forestry history. Using original machinery, it shows how tree seeds were harvested and explores topics from life and work in the forest. It covers both technical processes and the people and activities associated with the forest.

Elmstein’s Wappenschmiede also combines craftsmanship and the history of technology. The historic forge was equipped with a waterwheel-powered hammer; the underlying technical principle is described as being about 1,000 years old. During regular blacksmith demonstrations, visitors can try their hand at nail forging. Demonstration dates may change, so check them before your visit.

The history of Elmstein Castle ruins includes the fact that, around the middle of the 13th century, parts of the castle and associated forests were pledged to the Counts of Zweibrücken. Today, the castle ruins are privately owned and not freely accessible. Prior contact is required to visit, so please arrange access in advance.

Hiking trails and active experiences

The Elmstein Ziplinepark has 18 ziplines and three jumps from heights of up to 20 metres. The configuration and operating conditions may change; check the latest information before making plans. As a different kind of experience, circular hiking route 15 directly connects Kuckucksbahnhof with the Mordkammerloch Trail. Markings may be revised, so check the current trail markers before setting out.

There are three hiking trails in the area around the Trifterlebnispfad, approximately 2, 8.5 and 11.5 kilometres long. These approximate distances offer a practical point of comparison when planning, without specifying a walking time. The Mordkammerloch Trail also features traces of earlier hillside farming, including sandstone-paved paths and dry-stone walls. This lets you combine a hike with insights into the historic use of the hillside.

Plan your visit and journey

The Walter-Bernius-Anlage provides accessible access to pit-pat, a Kneipp pool and a wheelchair-accessible circular trail. Five information boards along the trail cover the historical use of the forest. A platform at the site offers views of the Speyerbach, where timber was once floated towards the Rhine. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

The Kuckucksbähnel railway reaches Elmstein from Neustadt via Lambrecht. Operating days and timetables may change, so check them if you plan to include the train journey in your trip. With its rail connection, hiking trails, forest history and the offerings at the Walter-Bernius-Anlage, Elmstein has a range of different highlights.
