Kallstadt lies directly on the German Wine Route at the foot of the Haardt. Vineyards, historic streetscapes and routes into the surrounding countryside shape the town. If you are considering Kallstadt as a destination for a hotel stay, you can combine your visit with wine, local history or walks, depending on what you would like to do there.

Vineyards and routes around Kallstadt

The vineyards cover around 270 hectares, including the top vineyard site of Saumagen. You will encounter the name beyond wine-growing: the site is also associated locally with a culinary Saumagen specialty served in restaurants. Individual restaurants’ offerings may change. The Kallstadt winegrowers’ cooperative offers guided wine tastings, cellar tours and vineyard walks by prior arrangement; these offerings may also change.

Several different routes are available for walks and hikes. The Saumagen Trail leads from Kallstadt to the Saumagen vineyard site on a gentle gradient and offers views of the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. On the route from Kallstadt to Herxheim am Berg, you walk along the upper edge of the Felsenberg; from there, the view extends across the Haardtrand and the Rhine Plain. The starting point for this hike is Platz der 100 Weine. Check route markings and conditions before setting out.

The circular route via Villa am Weilberg to Bad DĂĽrkheim runs through vineyards on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Its paths are mostly paved, partly natural-surface, and have no significant inclines. Another option is the Palatinate Almond Trail: it passes the entrance to the Berntal/Felsenberg nature reserve and then continues to Kallstadt. You can also start hikes in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park from Kallstadt. The landscapes and path surfaces vary between the routes described; check current signage and conditions in advance.

Townscape and culture

Key sights include numerous half-timbered houses and winegrowers’ estates. The wine arcades at Saumagenplatz are another highlight. St. Salvator’s Church also shapes the townscape: it dates from 1772 and has a 36-meter-high tower. Its Gothic lower section contrasts with a Baroque slate spire; the church also houses an organ by Geib, an organ builder from Saarbrücken.

The Kallstadt Lion stands guard beside a historic fountain with a trough. The archaeological site of Villa am Weilberg lies on the edge of town. Information boards explain the former Roman wine press there; excavated sarcophagi are also on display. Check access to the site locally before your visit.

Plan your wine and events

The Saumagenkerwe is an annual wine festival celebrated in early September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current events calendar. This lets you factor a possible festival visit into your travel plans without assuming the dates for any particular year.
