Altenbamberg combines castle ruins on a ridge with historic landmarks in the town and winegrowing in the Nahe region. The different themes are easy to distinguish during your stay: Altenbaumburg represents medieval architectural history and hiking trails, while the church and Jewish memorial sites tell further chapters of the town’s history. Vineyard sites and the Steigerhof winery add to this picture.

Altenbaumburg and its architectural history

Altenbaumburg is the ancestral castle of the Counts of Rau and one of the largest castle ruins in the Palatinate. This spur castle stands on a ridge above Altenbamberg. The castle grounds measure 200 by 40 meters and are divided into the upper, middle and lower castles. The three sections date from different building periods: their size and internal layout thus offer two distinct clues for understanding the complex.

Treunenfels is also part of the castle complex’s history: the site is the former outer bailey of Altenbaumburg and stands amid the vineyards. The two named structures thus bring together different aspects—the castle as an ancestral seat and Treunenfels as a former outwork.

The Catholic church in Altenbamberg was built in 1783 and is dedicated to Mary and Saint Maurice. Inside the church is a Trombach Madonna from the former Trombach Monastery. Its year of construction, dedication and Marian image each offer a different perspective on the town’s ecclesiastical history.

Hiking and access to the castle

Altenbaumburg can be reached on foot via hiking trails from Bad MĂĽnster am Stein-Ebernburg and Bad Kreuznach. Access to the castle is via BurgstraĂźe in the town center. Check the latest access information before your hike, as it may change.

The Altenbaumburgweg provides a specified route: the hiking trail is 8.4 kilometers long, leads to the castle ruins and passes through the forests of Bad Kreuznach, Ebernburg and Frei-Laubersheim. Altenbamberg’s hiking trail network also includes a barbecue area and a shelter in a wooded setting.

Jewish history in Altenbamberg

The historic cemeteries can be distinguished by the periods during which they were in use. The Old Jewish Cemetery “Am Narrenbrunnen” was used from 1750 to 1890; the New Jewish Cemetery in Altenbamberg from 1873 to 1937. These periods overlap from 1873 to 1890. The New Jewish Cemetery is separated from the Christian cemetery within the municipal cemetery enclosure.

The Altenbamberg synagogue is also part of this history: it was built in 1892 and destroyed in 1938, leaving only remnants of its walls. For the cemeteries, the focus is on their periods of use; for the synagogue, it is on its construction and destruction. These dates help place the different sites in context without combining them into a single chapter of the town’s history.

Winegrowing along the Nahe

The Steigerhof winery is located at the edge of Altenbamberg, on a rise at the beginning of the Alsenz valley in the Nahe wine-growing region. Another connection to wine is the Rotenberg in Altenbamberg: it is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE and belongs to the Nahe wine-growing region. The winery and the classified vineyard site are distinct points of interest if you would like to learn about the local wine landscape.

Visitor arrangements at Steigerhof may change; a vineyard classification may also be updated by the producer or the VDP. If you are planning a visit or want to confirm the classification, check the latest information in advance.
