Neu-Bamberg: Hiking and History
Accommodation in Neu-Bamberg
Neu-Bamberg is a destination for travelers who want to combine hiking with local history. Two Hiwweltour trails, a historic trail and the Neu-Baumburg castle ruins give the trip a variety of focal points. The two hikes differ in length, starting points and landscape scenery; the Eichelberg trail is also rated moderate and includes steeper sections.
Local History and Castle Ruins
A historic trail passes through buildings and places that are important to the town’s history. An accompanying audio version adds to the tour. This means the focus is not limited to a single building: you can discover local history while walking between a range of historic sites.
The restored Neu-Baumburg castle ruins crown Neu-Bamberg. Construction of the fortress began in the first third of the 13th century. In 1980, parts of the old fortress were restored and rebuilt. The trail and the ruins offer different perspectives: one explores history across several buildings and places, while the other traces the development of a fortress over a long period.
The name of Neu-Bamberg’s Eichelberg also has a historical connection. The vineyard name “am Eichelberg” is documented for the year 1521. This date refers to the recorded form of the name and adds a connection to viticulture to the hiking and local history.
Hiwweltour Heideblick
The Hiwweltour Heideblick is a 10 km circular trail starting and ending at Hesselborner MĂĽhle in Neu-Bamberg. The route combines cultivated vineyards, protected natural areas, heathland and panoramic views around Neu-Bamberg. The trail alternates between open landscapes and a variety of natural environments.
One section follows an old railway line through the Appelbach valley to KatzensteigermĂĽhle. From the Adlerdenkmal viewpoint, you can look out over the Neu-Bamberger Heide nature reserve. The views of the protected area and the other landscapes give this trail its own character among the two hiking options.
Access routes to the Heideblick are available at Burggraben, Uhrturm and Hesselborner MĂĽhle. Check the latest route and access information before setting out so your plans match conditions on the ground.
Hiwweltour Eichelberg
The Hiwweltour Eichelberg is an 11.08 km circular trail. It starts and ends at the old railway station between Frei-Laubersheim and Neu-Bamberg. In terms of length, it is 1.08 km longer than the 10 km Hiwweltour Heideblick. The different starting points can also help when planning your hike.
Along the old railway line, the trail passes a quartzite porphyry quarry, whose operations may change. The route also offers views towards Neu-Bamberger Heide, Ajaxturm and the castle ruins in Neu-Bamberg. Rated moderate, it has steeper sections on the ascent and descent of Eichelberg. These details give a specific impression of the trail’s length and terrain, without suggesting that the two hikes are alike beyond their distinct features.
Guided hikes are offered on both the Hiwweltour Eichelberg and the Hiwweltour Heideblick. If you would like to plan a guided hike, check in advance which dates and booking options are currently available.
