If you are looking for a hotel in Bruschied, it helps to start by deciding what you would like to focus on: the village’s history, or combining your stay with hiking and day-trip destinations? The chapel, parish church and village layout tell stories of different periods; the landscape and destinations in the Hahnenbach Valley offer a different focus.

Marian Chapel and St. Francis Xavier Church

The Marian Chapel stands on the road to Schneppenbach and was built in 1699. A foundation inscription inside also bears this date. A small bell was added in 1704; its inscription reads “Ora pro nobis - Jesus Maria Josef Elisabeth ano 1704”. In 1854, the chapel received a tower superstructure, built by Bruschied carpenter Matthias Johann Römer. During renovations in 1921, a small seated wooden figure of a devil was discovered and interpreted as an old protective charm. The Marian Chapel is a listed monument.

The dates point to several historical stages rather than a single construction date: the inscription and bell followed the building’s construction, and the tower superstructure was added later. The interpretation of the wooden figure is also part of the chapel’s history, but remains an interpretation. This helps distinguish the original construction history from later additions.

The parish church of St. Francis Xavier was built in 1892/93 as a single-nave, Neo-Gothic plastered building with a 5/8 choir. Its cornerstone was laid on September 26, 1892. The church was consecrated on December 4, 1893, the feast day of its patron, St. Francis Xavier. A Stations of the Cross was added in 1895. This sequence combines specific construction dates with the dedication to the church’s patron, adding another, more recent historical layer to the village’s story.

Village Square and Local Art

The village square was created in 1988/89 on a former garden plot. The village fountain was artistically designed by Gerald Winter: an open hand holds a round bowl from which water flows. There are also reliefs on the north wall of the old bakery near the village square. Together, the square, fountain and reliefs offer a glimpse of the village’s design beyond its religious buildings.

Lützelsoon and Destinations in the Hahnenbach Valley

The Lützelsoon is a quartzite mountain range with access to hiking. On a walk to the 569-meter-high Teufelsfels, views extend across the Hunsrück, the Idar Forest and the Nahe Valley, as well as toward the Donnersberg. Bruschied forms part of the surrounding landscape. The views and the village’s history appeal to different interests: here, the landscape takes center stage; there, the historic buildings.

Rudolfshaus, a district of Bruschied in the Hahnenbach Valley, provides hiking access to the ruins of the medieval Schmidtburg, the Herrenberg slate mine with its fossil museum, and the Celtic settlement of Altburg. The Schmidtburg was first documented as a defensive castle in 962 and later served as an administrative seat; large parts were destroyed in 1688. The Herrenberg visitor mine near Bundenbach showcases the work of slate miners, fossils and a small mining museum. It has been adapted for visits by wheelchair users. Altburg adds a Celtic settlement to this selection. Historic ruins, mining and fossils, and a settlement site thus offer different themes for day trips.
