Hochstetten-Dhaun: Hotels, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Hochstetten-Dhaun
If you’re looking for a hotel in Hochstetten-Dhaun, the local cultural attractions and trails can help shape your stay. Historic buildings and churches sit alongside hiking and cycling routes, each with its own route details and destinations.
Dhaun Castle and Historic Sites
The medieval castle of Dhaun was built in the early 12th century. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a Baroque palace under Wild- and Rhinegrave Carl. Dhaun Castle is an important cultural monument of the Nahe and Hunsrück region, and its historic appearance is exceptionally well preserved. The complex is intended for cultural events. It includes underground passages and a 10,000-square-metre castle park that is open to visitors daily.
The Evangelical Church in Dhaun preserves 24 biblical panel paintings and twelve depictions of apostles and evangelists from the former castle chapel. They date from the first half of the 17th century. You can view reproductions in the ruins of the former court chapel at Dhaun Castle. The collegiate church of St. Johannisberg was granted collegiate status in 1318. Its funerary monuments to the Wild- and Rhinegraves of Dhaun trace the development of sculpture over four centuries, up to the mid-18th century.
The ruins of Brunkenstein also connect visible architectural remains with a historical context: the remnants of the walls are clearly visible there. Brunkenstein was one of the military outposts built in 1336 for strategic purposes.
Hiking Trails, Cycling and Views
The Wildgrafenweg is a 13.3-kilometre hiking route, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes. The recommended start and end point is the “Hochstetten-Geological Nature Trail” hiking car park in Hochstetten-Dhaun. The route passes the ruins of Brunkenstein and offers a view of Dhaun Castle. Its long-distance views extend across the Hunsrück ridges, the North Palatine Uplands and the Nahe Valley. The Wildgrafenweg also leads into the Itzbach Valley, where protected wetlands are located.
Travel to the Wildgrafenweg by taking the RB33 to Hochstetten (Nahe) station is also described; from there, a 900-metre walk follows Bahnhofstraße and Dhauner Straße. Check train and bus connections before setting out. Another hiking option for visitors to Hochstetten-Dhaun is the Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Trail. The Nahe Cycle Route runs through the districts of Hochstetten and Hochstädten, offering a separate cycling option during your stay.
Another viewpoint is the Nahe Skywalk: the 65-square-metre platform extends seven metres beyond the cliff edge of a former quarry, overlooking the Nahe Valley. A guided experience combines the Skywalk with Dhaun Castle and the collegiate church of St. Johannisberg.
Dining and Regional Cuisine
Wappensaal Dhaun restaurant is in the district of Dhaun, close to Dhaun Castle, the Wildgrafenweg and the Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Trail. The restaurant has a panoramic terrace and a beer garden with views of the Simmerbach and Nahe valleys. It serves regional, seasonal and themed cuisine. A guided experience in Hochstetten-Dhaun can also include a tasting of four selected regional wines and regional dishes. Check booking details and availability before making plans.
Historic Architecture in Bad Kreuznach
In the wider destination of Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses offer a distinctive historic feature. They were built from 1480 onward due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. This architectural feature complements the medieval and later building histories you can discover in Hochstetten-Dhaun.
