Ippesheim: Historic Architecture and Leisure Grounds
Accommodation in Ippesheim
Visitors considering Ippesheim as a destination will find that its history has a clear focus: historic homes, the Protestant Christ Church, and a village layout that has changed very little since around 1800. This is complemented by a leisure area and the development of traffic conditions following the completion of the B 41 bypass.
Historic Architecture and Village Character
The Protestant Christ Church is located at Frankfurter Straße 2. The two-storey hall building, constructed of small ashlar masonry, was built in 1892 to a design by C. Schwartze of Darmstadt. It brings together a clearly defined building type and a precise date of construction. The church thus provides a different architectural point of reference from the homes, which feature, among other materials, brick and, in some cases, half-timbering.
The corner house at Ernst-Ludwig-Straße 1 is a brick building dating from 1891. The home at Frankfurter Straße 8 dates from shortly after 1900, has one and a half storeys, and is built of yellow brick. The comparison distinguishes between construction dates and methods: the 1891 brick building is contrasted with a yellow-brick building from shortly after 1900, whose number of storeys is also specified. Together, the buildings demonstrate different architectural accents among the village’s historic structures.
Two half-timbered homes show another building style. The house at Ernst-Ludwig-Straße 4 dates from the 18th century and is partly half-timbered. The corner house at Falkensteinstraße 1 probably dates from the late 18th century and has partly plastered half-timbering. The two buildings offer a concrete comparison: they are on different streets, date from the 18th century, and differ in the described treatment of their half-timbering. The corner house’s date is believed to be from the late 18th century.
Settlement History and Open Space
According to tradition, a Frank first founded a settlement in Ippesheim in the 9th or 10th century. This early settlement story dates back further than the construction dates of the houses and church mentioned above. At the same time, Ippesheim’s layout has changed very little since around 1800. Thus, the village’s traditional founding story, the continuity of its layout, and individual buildings with specific construction dates all come together in the picture of the place.
The leisure area in Ippesheim was created on the site of a former sports field. It features earth mounds planted with wildflowers, benches, play equipment, and a ball court. The area combines landscaped features with opportunities to rest, play, and kick a ball around. Its former use is also part of its history: a leisure area was created from a former sports field. There is also a play area at the sports field.
The development of transport also adds to the picture of the village. The completion of the new B 41 bypass led to a noticeable reduction in traffic in Ippesheim. Alongside the layers of building history and the leisure area, this is another aspect of the village’s development.
