Nußbaum – Wine, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Nußbaum
Nußbaum offers several reasons to visit: a landscape that invites you to enjoy relaxing hikes, viticulture with three named vineyard sites, and local history stretching from the family of knights to the town’s reconstruction after 1504. There are also viewpoints and information boards related to Hildegard. You can get to know the town through its trails, wine and historic buildings.
Hiking Landscape and Viticulture
The varied landscape is ideal for relaxing hikes. Matzpfuhl, a natural monument, is a stand of poplar trees planted during the Napoleonic era. From the Friedenseiche hiking car park, you can enjoy views across the Nahe Valley towards the Donnersberg. Together, these provide two different ways to experience the landscape: a natural monument and a named viewpoint.
The wine hiking trail in Nußbaum showcases the Nahe Valley landscape. Viticulture also shapes the town: vines grow across 20 hectares of vineyards in the Rotfeld, Höllenberg and Sonnenberg sites. These three names give viticulture a distinct local structure. Nußbaum also has winemakers and an inn where visitors can stop for a meal. Wine, trails and places to eat are therefore separate aspects to consider when planning your trip.
Local History and Historic Buildings
Until 1400, Nußbaum was the seat of the Knights of Nußbaum. In 1504, the town was almost completely destroyed by fire; about a century later, it was rebuilt from the remains of the old town center. These two dates mark a turning point and a later new beginning in the town’s history.
The tower of Nußbaum Church dates from the 13th century. The church is used by both denominations. The churchyard of the shared church also contains a Baroque grave cross. Nußbaum Castle was renovated in the 18th century and is privately owned. These buildings point to different chapters in the town’s history: a medieval tower, a church shared by two denominations and a castle renovated at a later date.
Hildegard Information Boards and Pilgrimage Trail
Nußbaum has two information boards on the Hildegard Route, each covering a different topic. Board 19, titled “Medicinal Herbs,” is at the village square. At the edge of town, Board 20 covers “Land Animals” from Hildegard’s book. The topics lead from medicinal herbs to animals, and the boards are located at the village square and the edge of town.
The Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Trail also provides a wider context for planning your hikes. One stage connects Monzingen, Nußbaum, Bad Sobernheim, Staudernheim and Disibodenberg. If you include this stage in your hike, check current trail conditions beforehand.
More Destinations in the Wider Bad Kreuznach Region
The wider Bad Kreuznach region also offers other historical and landscape-related attractions. In Bad Kreuznach, the Bridge Houses were built from 1480 onwards to make up for a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on pillars of the old Nahe Bridge, built around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the town of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor estate, set in a historic park.
Another example is the barefoot path in Bad Sobernheim, a summertime recreational attraction. The 3.5-kilometer footpath leads to the Nahe and includes a clay treading pool, an obstacle course and various types of ground surface. So, alongside Nußbaum’s wine and local history, the wider Bad Kreuznach region offers a choice of different activities, including museum visits and a seasonal trail in Bad Sobernheim.
