Schloßböckelheim combines a striking gorge of the Nahe with wine experiences, traces of history and hiking destinations. For planning your visit, you can distinguish between these highlights: rocks and the narrow Nahe shape the landscape, Böckelheim Castle tells the story of the town, and trails to Heimberg Tower lead to sweeping panoramic views.

The Nahe, rocks and wine

Near Schloßböckelheim, the Nahe gorge is narrow and features distinctive rock formations. Within the municipality, the Nahe Valley narrows sharply at Felsenberg. The Schloßböckelheim Heath lies in the porphyry uplands of Münster am Stein. These provide different points of reference for exploring the landscape: the narrow stretch of river, the striking narrowing of the valley and the heath’s location in the porphyry uplands.

Weingut Klein & Sohn cultivates around eight hectares of vineyards in and around Schloßböckelheim; this area may change. The winery offers wine tastings in its own setting and also organizes wine tastings and wine tours. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the booking arrangements in advance, as they may change.

Winzerhof Härter offers wine tastings, vineyard trips by horse-drawn carriage and wine weekends. The Felsenstübchen wine tavern serves the winery’s wines and a wide selection of hot and cold dishes. Booking arrangements for tastings and tours, availability at Winzerhof Härter and the wine tavern’s opening arrangements may change, so check the details of your chosen offer in advance.

Böckelheim Castle and history

A document dated February 16, 824 is generally considered the first documentary mention of Schloßböckelheim. Böckelheim Castle is one of the oldest castles in the Nahegau region and is associated with a notable event from 1105: at the end of that year, Henry V had his father, Henry IV, taken prisoner in Ingelheim and brought to Böckelheim Castle. Henry IV was held prisoner there. The castle was destroyed in 1688 on the order of the French.

The grounds of Böckelheim Castle can be visited at any time; nevertheless, check the access conditions on site before your visit. Other destinations open to visitors include the castle ruins and a viewpoint overlooking the Nahe Valley. You can plan historical sites and views of the landscape as different highlights of your exploration.

Hiking and views

A signposted circular hiking trail to Heimberg Tower starts at the hikers’ car park near the Schloßböckelheim cemetery. Seven stops along the trail focus on the characteristic animal and plant life of Heimberg. The observation platform at Heimberg Tower offers a 360-degree panorama: the view stretches from the Soonwald across the Taunus to the North Palatine Uplands and Donnersberg. The route therefore combines nature topics with sweeping views of the surrounding area.

The Nahe Hiking Trail and the Hildegard von Bingen Pilgrimage Route also pass directly by the Felsenberghof wine and guest house. These two named routes offer another point of reference if you want to plan your hike around specific trails. As routes may change and local conditions for the circular trail should be checked, find out about the current route and on-site conditions before setting out.
