Kommen: Village Chapel and Views
Accommodation in Kommen
Forests and meadows surround Kommen; from viewpoints at the edge of the village, the view stretches across the Moselle Valley towards the Eifel. If you consider natural surroundings and expansive views when choosing a destination, these features give a concrete impression of the local character.
Village character, chapel and road connections
The village chapel was built in 1730 and serves as a branch church of the Catholic parish community of Monzelfeld. A church service is held there once a month; the frequency may change. If attending a service is important to your stay, check the current schedule before travelling.
The B50neu provides road connections from Kommen towards Simmern, Wittlich, Trier and Luxembourg. For your specific journey, you should plan for the route and traffic conditions.
The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination
In the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination, the volcanic Eifel, the Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, rich in forests and meadows, meet. These landscapes provide a setting for a variety of nature and cultural themes.
At 816 metres high, the Erbeskopf is ideal for hiking and offers a variety of winter sports. The National Park Gate at the Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment. Its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors.
In Manderscheid, two hiking routes differ in layout and length: the Manderscheider Burgenstieg is a 5.4-kilometre, moderately challenging circular route around the castles; the stated duration is two hours. The Burgenklettersteig comprises three stages around the two Manderscheid castles, is about four kilometres long in total, and has safety cables along one kilometre. The Burgenstieg also offers a moderate difficulty rating and duration as points of comparison.
The wider destination also offers a range of cultural highlights. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502. Klausen continues to be a destination for pilgrims every year. The Zylinderhaus presents 90 years of German automotive history and more than 100 cars, motorcycles and vans. The Cusanus birthplace in Kues is used as a museum and event space and features a permanent exhibition about Nicholas of Cusa.
The Roman theme is represented in Neumagen-Dhron: the Museum Noviomagi displays original finds such as clay vessels and stone fragments from funerary monuments, taking visitors back to Roman times. A roughly 45-minute audio tour also starts at the Neumagen-Dhron Tourist Information Centre. Its archaeological circular route is about 800 metres long and passes historic sites, monuments and finds.
Another perspective is offered by the wine shop in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nicholas Hospital. Wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer are tasted there. The selection includes 100 wines, ranging from quality wines to ice wine.
