Bombogen brings together a range of themes to help you plan your stay: sacred buildings, the history of tobacco growing and hiking routes around Lüxeberg. Specific construction dates and differences in architectural styles help explain the village’s history; for time spent outdoors, the waymarking, route length and destinations mentioned are relevant. This lets you decide in advance whether to focus your visit more on architecture, landscape or hiking.

Churches and Chapels

St. Maria Bombogen, the Church of the Assumption of Mary, stands on elevated ground on the southwestern edge of the village. It is a late Baroque hall church, built in 1789–92 on the site of two earlier buildings. “Hall church” describes a church with a single, unified main space; the designation “late Baroque” describes its architectural style. Traces of decorative wall painting have also been uncovered in St. Maria Bombogen.

The Rosary Chapel at Berlinger Straße 31 is a rendered building with a roof turret, dating from 1737. A rendered building is constructed with a plastered exterior; a roof turret is a tower-like structure on the roof. South of Bombogen, at the end of Zur Acht street, stands the Achter Bildchen Chapel, an open rendered building from the 1880s. In terms of architectural style, the parish church’s hall design contrasts with two rendered buildings; chronologically, the three examples range from 1737 through 1789–92 to the 1880s.

History and Landscape

The former tobacco warehouse is now used as a storage hall. It was repurposed after tobacco growing had declined substantially in importance in the 1960s. The local history of tobacco growing can thus be linked to a specific change in the building’s use.

LĂĽxeberg, also known locally as LĂĽxemkopf, lies near Bombogen and can be seen from the village as evidence of volcanic origins. It is one of the oldest volcanic cones in the region. Unlike the churches and chapels, LĂĽxeberg speaks to the formation of the landscape; the sacred buildings, by contrast, can be classified by their architectural style and construction period. The Bombogen Naschgarten, with almost 80 fruit trees, offers fruit to everyone. There are also renaturalized waterways and the LĂĽxemkopf recreation area.

Hiking Trails and Tour Planning

The “Romans, Knights & Volcanoes” circular hiking trail follows a meadow to the edge of Bombogen. The route continues along Lüxekopf to “Auf die Höchst.” It is waymarked in both directions and can also be hiked in reverse. Check the route on site before setting off, as trail conditions may change. A waymarked hiking route at Neuerburger Kopf is 7 km long and suitable for a day trip, especially for families with children.

For the circular hiking trail, the direction of travel and points along the route are key; the Neuerburger Kopf route can be assessed by its 7 km length and suitability for a day trip. The hiking information therefore answers different planning questions: What route does a trail follow, and which distance is suitable for a day trip?
