Eisenschmitt brings together the history of ironworking, its literary connection to Clara Viebig and a circular trail along the Salm. This offers different points of interest for planning a trip: the town’s historical development, literature and a hike through river meadows and a valley.

Ironworking and local history

Eisenschmitt was first documented in 1372 under the name “Yssensmyt uff der Salmen.” From 1503 to 1670, a larger ironworks with a hammer mill and forge operated in the town centre. Historical iron processing relied on local iron ore, charcoal from the surrounding forests and hydropower from the Salm. These foundations can be distinguished as raw material, fuel and energy source, giving the local industrial history a concrete structure. The iron industry in the Salm Valley was permanently shut down in 1868. The first recorded mention predates the later ironworks.

Clara Viebig and local history

The Clara Viebig Centre in Eisenschmitt presents background information, original books from Clara Viebig’s time and other exhibits. Exhibition content and visiting conditions may change, so check the latest details before your visit. The literary connection extends beyond the centre: Clara Viebig’s 1900 novel Das Weiberdorf includes landscape descriptions and fictional portrayals of women in the area around Eisenschmitt.

The fountain in front of the church is a local historical landmark, designed by the artist Johann Baptist Lenz. Its three tiers depict the ironworks, ironworking trades and scenes from Das Weiberdorf. The fountain’s design thus brings together the themes of ironworking and literature. Also known as the Clara Viebig Fountain, it is a highlight of the Mill Trail at kilometre 4.8.

Forests, the Salm and the Mill Trail

Eisenschmitt is considered an idyllic, forest-rich mountain village away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Its surroundings bring together forests, meadows and a river valley in a varied low mountain landscape. Along the Mill Trail, the Salm and its meadows shape the route and the views.
