Get to know Etgert through its historical ties to the Mark Thalfang, the symbols in its coat of arms and the hiking routes around the Massingsmühle. These offer different perspectives on the town when looking for a hotel in Etgert: history, landscape symbolism and a direct connection to a circular trail.

History in the Coat of Arms and a Cultural Monument

Etgert has belonged to the Mark Thalfang since the 12th century. In the coat of arms, the red lion represents the Wild- and Rheingrafen. The oak leaves refer both to an old oak tree at the village entrance and to the oak forests surrounding the parish lands. Thus, the same coat of arms brings together a single tree at the village entrance and the forests around the parish lands: a historical reference meets two different landscape symbols.

The Etgerter Sägemühle sawmill, a cultural monument, lies north of Etgert. It complements the heraldry with a specific, named cultural landmark.

Routes Around the Massingsmühle

The Massingsmühle is a campsite in a natural Hunsrück valley crossed by a rushing mountain stream. It lies about one kilometre from the Hunsrückhöhenstraße B 327. The Etgert circular trail connects directly to the Massingsmühle in Etgert. The area around the Massingsmühle is also linked to the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the Hölzbach Gorge and the Ausonius circular trail. Check trail conditions locally.

Getting to the Massingsmühle

Visitors reach the Massingsmühle from the B 327 via an access road about 1.1 kilometres long. The campsite is not accessed through the village of Etgert. The approximate distance from the federal road and the length of the access road are two different details to help you find your way. Check the access arrangements again before travelling, as they may change.

Bernkastel-Wittlich as the Wider Destination

The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows. One example of the destination’s nature and outdoor activities is the 816-metre-high Erbeskopf: it invites visitors to hike and offers a wide range of winter sports. The National Park Gate at the Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors.

Cultural history is also among the themes of the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502; Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. The vinotheque in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nikolaus Hospital offers a different focus. Wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer are available for tasting; the selection includes 100 wines, from quality wine to ice wine. Another cultural attraction in the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination is the Zylinderhaus: it showcases 90 years of German automotive history, as well as more than 100 cars, motorcycles and vans.
