Graach an der Mosel as a wine village
Graach an der Mosel is a Moselle wine village with hiking trails and traces of history. The vineyards of Himmelreich, Domprobst, and Abtsberg are part of the village. In the historic center, the typical Moselle half-timbered houses of winegrowers and wineries define the townscape. The vineyards and historic buildings show two sides of the wine village: its landscape and the architectural character of its center.
Hiking among vineyards and forests
The Himmelreich hiking trail is an easy, 7.5-kilometer hike. About half of the route runs high above the Moselle along vineyard paths; the rest leads through open forests. If you want to combine both landscapes in one tour, you can do so on the Himmelreich hiking trail.
The trail starts and ends at the Graacher Schäferei An der Traver Ruh parking lot; Auf´m Hahn is an alternative starting point. Information about the starting points may change due to local access regulations. So check the access information before setting out on your hike.
The Graacher Schanzenweg passes preserved fortification remains and the Maria Zill viewpoint. The Graacher Schanzen are the remains of an 18th-century fortification. The Moselsteig passes through Graach and the district of Schäferei. The trails differ in focus: the Himmelreich hiking trail offers an easy 7.5-kilometer route; the Schanzenweg is defined by fortification remains and Maria Zill, while the Moselsteig passes through Graach and Schäferei.
On the Eselspädchen, clear-weather views extend as far as the Eifel; from viewpoints in Schäferei, you can look across the Moselle and the green Moselle Valley. These offer two distinct perspectives on Graach: distant views reaching as far as the Eifel in clear conditions, and views across the valley and the Moselle from Schäferei.
Experience wine and discover local history
The wine walk in Graach combines a route along the Eselspädchen and through the goat enclosure with tastings of ten wines from Graach’s winegrowers. Wineries in Graach offer wine tastings by appointment. The two options differ in format: a wine walk with a set route and tastings of several wines, or a wine tasting at a winery by appointment. Check the current dates before planning to join the wine walk.
The Graach municipal and tourist office also organizes wine weekends, day trips, hiking and cycling tours, as well as bus or boat trips.
The church in Graach also has a specific historical connection: in 1914, it was fitted with an organ made by Bonn organ builder Johannes Klais. Along with the half-timbered houses and fortification remains, the church’s furnishings are also part of Graach’s history.
