Gräfendhron: Discover hiking and local history
Accommodation in Gräfendhron
The Dhrontal Wacken Tour and the local architectural and community history offer different ways to plan a trip to Gräfendhron. When choosing a hotel, consider whether hiking or the historic landmarks will be the main focus of your stay.
Hiking the Dhrontal Wacken Tour
The Dhrontal Wacken Tour is designated as a premium hiking trail and is located in the Saar-Hunsrück Premium Hiking Region. On steep slopes, it passes through shallow-soil sessile oak forests, as well as natural stream habitats. Other landscape features include sunny silicate rocks and their vegetation, along with impressive rock formations that the trail passes. The views extend across the Dhron Valley and the Hunsrück landscape towards the Erbeskopf. Forest, stream, rock and expansive views are thus distinct features of the route.
The tour is considered moderately difficult to difficult because of several ascents and descents. Take this rating into account when comparing hikes by difficulty and landscape. You can choose Gräfendhron village square as a possible starting point. The village hall is about 250 metres from the hiking trail. The Dhrontal Wacken Tour has no direct public transport connection, so take this into account when planning your journey.
Buildings and historical milestones
Gräfendhron lies on the Roman Ausonius Road. The first documentary mention of the village dates to 3 May 1255. Its historic buildings include the Catholic branch church at Kapellenstraße 1, listed in the monument inventory as a small, plastered building dating from 1785.
A two-arched rubble-stone bridge from the 18th or 19th century stands on Hauptstraße. The former mill at Im Dhrontal 4 is listed as a linear farmstead with the date 1872. Together with the date of the first documentary mention, these buildings offer several concrete points of reference for exploring local history: from the village’s location on the Roman Ausonius Road to church architecture and bridge and farmstead construction.
More to explore in the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination
In the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows, meet. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf is a great place for hiking and offers a wide range of winter sports. At the Erbeskopf, the National Park Gate provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors. For a different kind of excursion, the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route follows a disused railway line for 58.5 kilometres from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues.
Cultural attractions are also part of the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502; Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. The Noviomagi Museum displays original finds such as clay vessels and stone fragments from tomb monuments. In Bernkastel-Kues, the vinotheque in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nicholas Hospital offers tastings of wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. The selection includes 100 wines, from quality wines to ice wine.
