Klausen: Pilgrimage History and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Klausen
Klausen brings together pilgrimage history, art and architectural history, and routes suited to different schedules. The Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary, the historic monastery library, and the Abbot’s Garden offer glimpses into different eras. There are also walks in Klausen and Krames, pilgrim routes, a viewpoint, and a recurring festival. When planning, it is worth considering the duration of the routes, the time needed to visit a church, and possible event dates separately.
Pilgrimage Church and Historical Landmarks
The Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary was consecrated in 1502. Its Antwerp altarpiece is 6.20 metres high, dates from around 1480, and depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ. The church’s Chapel of Grace dates back to the 15th century and was redesigned in 1902. The church’s history thus brings together different periods: the creation of the altarpiece, the older chapel, and its later redesign. The Rieger organ has 39 stops distributed across three manuals and a pedal.
The historic monastery library was built at the end of the 15th century above the sacristy of the Pilgrimage Church. Its holdings include a late medieval manuscript and early printed works known as incunabula. The collection therefore includes both a manuscript and early printed books. Guided visits to the monastery library and the Pilgrimage Church can be booked through the Catholic parish office. Check booking options before your arrival.
The Abbot’s Garden also has its own clearly dated design history: in 1769 it was redesigned on three terraces with a garden pavilion; the pavilion was restored in 1990. These dates mark a different period from the medieval landmarks in the church and library.
Walks and Pilgrim Routes
The central Klausen circular walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes and starts at the Marian Fountain. A church visit is not included, so plan it as a separate activity. The Krames village walk is estimated to take around 60 to 90 minutes. It also starts at the Marian Fountain, in front of the Pilgrimage Church. The time estimates therefore offer two different planning options, even though both routes start at the same point.
Two pilgrim routes with different connections also pass through Klausen. The Moselle Camino, approximately 180 kilometres long, runs from Koblenz-Stolzenfels to Trier and passes through Klausen and Krames. The Eifel Camino also passes through Klausen and meets the Moselle Camino at the foot of Maria Heimsuchung. If you want to understand how the routes connect, this meeting point is a specific difference from the village walks: it links two longer pilgrim routes.
Another option for a guided nature outing is the walk in the Pohlbach area, which leads to a two-part nature trail. Guided tours through the Klausen forestry district are available on request. Arrange any desired tour date in advance.
Cycling Connection and Viewpoint
Klausen is connected to the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route via the Pilgrimage Loop. For a different perspective on the landscape, head to the Klausenkreuz viewpoint: from there, you can look out over the Wittlich Depression and the Voreifel. In clear conditions, the view extends as far as the Volcanic Eifel. This visibility condition is important when planning, as long-distance views depend on the weather.
Krames: Trier Country House Style and Oven Festival
The Krames village walk passes a building in the Trier country house style. In this type of house, the living quarters, stable, and barn are all under one roof. The description of this architectural style shows how different uses were combined in a single building.
The recurring Backofenfest (Oven Festival) takes place in early September at the restored Krames communal oven. It features bread baked in the oven with traditional toppings, as well as local Viez cider. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates and arrangements in advance.
