Lieser lies in the Middle Moselle Valley between Koblenz and Trier and is characterized by steep vineyards along the Moselle. The town has a two-thousand-year tradition of winegrowing. Winegrowing, woodland and the Moselle landscape offer different ways to shape your trip: you can explore the vineyards on a themed circular trail, learn about forest ecology on an adventure trail, or choose a longer hiking stage. Architectural landmarks and a Roman discovery also offer a cultural perspective on Lieser.

Hiking and Experiencing the Landscape

The WeinbergsVielfalt circular trail takes families through the vineyards and focuses on the diversity of winegrowing.

The 3.14-kilometer Lieser Forest Adventure Trail is considered an easy loop and is suitable for families with children. Along the trail are interactive stations about forest ecology, wooden sculptures and stations about wildlife. There are also views toward the Moselle. Its focus sets it apart from the WeinbergsVielfalt circular trail: here, forest ecology and wildlife take center stage instead of the diversity of winegrowing.

The final stage of the Lieser Trail runs from Platten to Lieser through the lower Lieser Valley, vineyards and wooded slopes. It ends near the Lieserbach’s confluence with the Moselle and offers views of the Moselle landscape. At 8.95 kilometers, it is considerably longer than the 3.14-kilometer Forest Adventure Trail. Heldensicht above Lieser offers views across the Moselle landscape and other Moselle towns. The alpaca experience adds walks past meadows and typical Moselle vineyards to the range of activities.

Architecture and the History of Winegrowing

Lieser Castle combines an older section in the Neo-Renaissance style with a newer Art Nouveau section. Neo-Renaissance draws on forms from the Renaissance, while Art Nouveau is a distinct, later design style. St. Peter’s Church features elaborately designed Baroque furnishings. St. Paul’s Church stands on the 270-meter-high Paulsberg. A Roman wine press was discovered at the edge of town toward Bernkastel. This find adds an archaeological connection to winegrowing to the architectural and landscape impressions.

Bernkastel-Wittlich in the Wider Region

The wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley, and the Hunsrück, rich in forests and meadows. The 816-meter-high Erbeskopf is also a great place for hiking. The National Park Gate at Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors.

Cycling Route and Practical Information

The Maare-Moselle Cycle Route runs from Daun to Lieser along a former railway line. Check local route conditions before setting out. There is an e-bike charging station at the Tourist Information Office, Am Markt 38. In the town center, the boat landing is on the Moselle riverbank at Moselstraße. Before making plans, confirm that the charging station and boat landing are currently in service; visitor facilities may change.
