Lösnich: Winegrowing, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Lösnich
Lösnich combines centuries-old winegrowing with a themed trail, a cycling loop and historic buildings. If you are considering the town as a destination for a hotel stay, these highlights offer different ways to explore it: hiking, cycling and local history can each take centre stage.
Hiking and Cycling in Lösnich
The Lösnich themed trail “On the Trail of Nature” is classified as an easy route. It is 8.11 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The starting point and finish are at the car park by the Bürgerhaus (community centre). Information boards explain the nature themes “Earth”, “Air” and “Water”. The trail loops around the winegrowing town through wooded slopes and vineyards; along the way, views open up towards Kinheim and the surrounding meadows and woodlands. The route also passes the Sucellus archaeological site. The return leg goes through the historic Moselle village and past the Catholic parish church of St. Vitus.
For cycling, the approximately 30-kilometre Graacher-Schanzen Loop is a good option. It follows the Moselle Cycle Route through Lösnich and connects the route with Bernkastel-Kues, Wolf, Erden, Zeltingen-Rachtig and Graach. This offers different ways to plan your outing: an easy hike lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, or a cycling loop around 30 kilometres long.
Winegrowing Tradition and Events
Winegrowing has shaped Lösnich for centuries. Its vineyard sites include Lösnicher Försterlay and Lösnicher Burgberg. Wine also features in the annual calendar: for the Wine Spring and Lösnich Autumn events, local winemakers open their cellars and kitchens every year. You can therefore plan your stay around either a hike or cycle ride of your choice, or the dates of these events. Dates and programmes may change; check the latest event information if you wish to plan your trip around them.
Churches and the Townscape
The oldest church in Lösnich was first mentioned in 1066. The choir of the church built in 1639 is still used as a cemetery chapel. The present-day parish church of St. Vitus was built in 1879/80 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its Baroque high altar formerly belonged to the chapel of Lösnich Castle and bears the date 1719. This architectural history thus spans several different periods. Another of Lösnich’s sights is the Kesselstatt administrative building, which is now used as the rectory.
The townscape includes old half-timbered buildings as well as winemakers’ houses from the Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau periods. Together with the parish church and cemetery chapel, they offer further points of interest for a walk exploring the town’s architectural history. The themed trail combines scenery and nature themes with a section through the historic Moselle village; the cycling loop offers a different focus, continuing along the Moselle Cycle Route to the places mentioned above.
Getting to the Themed Trail
You can park for free at the car park by the Bürgerhaus and at the roundabout at the entrance to Lösnich. The main public transport stop for the themed trail is Lösnich Kreisverkehr. As parking and stop information may change, check these details before travelling.
