Breit sits on a rise above the valley of the Kleine Dhron; the terrain climbs towards the Kugelbaum natural monument. A roughly 200-year-old oak called Kugelbaum stands near the village. The Kugelbaum viewpoint is a possible destination for hikes from Breit, and there are also short walks. This gives visitors two different options for their stay: a short walk and a hike to a named viewpoint.

Hiking and mountain biking

Breit offers access points for mountain bike tours through the Hunsrück. Thalfang MTB Route 2 can be reached at the edge of the village in the direction of Talling. The Hunsrück Wind Trail begins at the wind turbines of the Berglicht wind farm. Another regional hiking option connected with Breit is the Wind, Water & Wacken dream loop. For destinations beyond the village, two approximate travel times are given: the access point for MTB Route 4 at Panoramabad Leiwen/Zummet can be reached from Breit along the Dhron Dam in about 20 minutes; the trail park in Mehring/Mosel is about 30 minutes away by mountain bike. These times refer to two different destinations: an access point for a route and a trail park.

Chapel and history

The chapel’s origins are thought to date back to the 14th century. The Chapel of St. Cosmas and Damian is listed as a protected cultural monument dating from 1700. The earlier date and the year 1700 mark different historical reference points: the origins of the chapel site and the date of the cultural monument. Over time, the chapel has undergone numerous alterations and renovation works. After a new cemetery hall was built in the early 1990s, the municipal council decided that services should once again be held in the chapel. A branch route of the Ausonius Road, the Roman link between Mainz and Trier, passes Breit.

A local meeting place

The Kleine Kneipe welcomes visitors; ideas for themed evenings are also welcome.

Bernkastel-Wittlich as a wider travel destination

The volcanic Eifel, the Moselle Valley and the forested Hunsrück meet in the wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf invites you to go hiking and offers a variety of winter sports. At Erbeskopf, the National Park Gate provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors. In the Moselle area of Bernkastel-Wittlich, you can experience wine culture by visiting cellars and taking part in tastings at wineries. Check in advance which wineries offer visits and tastings.

Cultural attractions are also part of the wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502; Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. The Zylinderhaus presents 90 years of German automotive history and more than 100 cars, motorcycles and vans. The Manderscheid Castle Trail is a moderately challenging 5.4-kilometre circular route around the castles of Manderscheid; the stated duration is two hours.
