Cochem-Zell: Imperial Castle, Nature and Cultural Routes
Accommodation in Cochem-Zell
Cochem-Zell offers a variety of reasons to plan a trip: Cochem Imperial Castle combines medieval history with neo-Gothic architecture, the Jungferweiher is important for bird species, particularly during migration, and the Geierlay suspension bridge makes its own distinctive impression with its dimensions.
Cochem Imperial Castle: History and interiors open to visitors
The medieval Cochem Imperial Castle was restored and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené in the 19th century as part of the Romantic castle revival. The interiors open to visitors include, among others, the Knights’ Hall, dining room, hunting room and private chamber. The different rooms offer a range of historical and architectural points of reference, without reducing the castle to a single room or period.
The castle also has a culinary offering: on Fridays and Saturdays, it serves rustic medieval feasts under the name “Gasterey nach Art der alten Rittersleut” (“Feast in the style of the old knights”). As the schedule may change, it is advisable to check the current dates before your visit. This lets you combine the castle experience with a specific dining offer without assuming that it is available every day.
Bird migration and excursions with their own focus
The Jungferweiher is an important breeding and resting area for numerous bird species. Its role in the annual cycle is particularly apparent during spring and autumn migration. Travelers wishing to include nature in their plans can set this seasonal focus alongside their cultural and historical interest in the castle.
Another destination is the Geierlay suspension bridge. It is 360 metres long and stands 100 metres above the Mörsdorfer Bachtal, between Sosberg in the district of Cochem-Zell and Mörsdorf in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. Its length and height make the bridge a clearly defined destination; its location connects two places across a district boundary. It therefore cannot be attributed solely to the district of Cochem-Zell.
More trails in the wider destination of Rhineland-Palatinate
The wider destination of Rhineland-Palatinate also offers trails with a variety of themes. The Collis circular hiking trail leads through woodland and vineyards to the Collis Tower, built from red brick in 1906, and offers views of Zell (Mosel) and the Moselle Valley. The Mesenicher Steinreichskäpp cultural trail explores geology, people and history through themed information boards and sculptures.
Other examples focus on different themes: the Römergräber Nehren trail leads from Nehren through the vineyards to the Roman burial temples on the Römerberg. The Lütz Slate Mine Trail is a seven-kilometre circular route with 14 interpretive and information boards about slate mining and the natural environment of Lütz. The Calmont via ferrata, meanwhile, focuses on the route and its safety features. It was built in 2002 as a joint project by the municipalities of Bremm, Ediger-Eller and Neef and is secured with steel cables, ladders, and numerous footholds and iron rungs. Access points are in Eller, by the railway bridge, and in Bremm, above the church; the hike takes about three hours.
