Location and Townscape

Kalkofen lies between the valleys of the Alsenz and Appel, about two kilometres northeast of Alsenz. Kalkofen is considered a place surrounded by vineyards and woodland. As a typical linear village, it is arranged along the main street, its central local axis. Old half-timbered and sandstone houses are part of the townscape. An old, privately maintained and fully renovated vineyard hut also contributes to the village’s character. These features give you specific points of reference as you get to know Kalkofen as a travel destination.

Historical Traces in the Name and Townscape

The name Kalkofen refers to the former importance of lime burning. A lime kiln is also depicted on the municipal coat of arms. The village fountain was designed in the shape of a lime kiln, bringing the theme back into the townscape. This means you will encounter the history of lime burning in several local motifs. Kalkofen was probably founded in the 9th century; the earliest documentary mention dates from 1365. These are two distinct points of reference: a probable date of origin and the earliest written record.

The village church is associated with a former St. George’s Chapel, mentioned in records from 1460. The current Protestant church building was constructed between 1800 and 1803. Its architecture is defined by round-arched windows with sandstone surrounds. The chapel’s mention and the construction period of the present church refer to different periods in the church’s history. Another local feature is the stone figure Kalki, which was installed in the village. Sandstone can thus be seen both in older houses and in the church’s window surrounds.
