Kerzenheim offers two distinct themes to consider when planning your stay: the history of St. Mary in Rosenthal and the townscape, with its preserved half-timbered houses and an octagonal church. At the same time, the town lies on the edge of the Palatinate Forest and directly on the B 47.

Monastery history in Rosenthal

The former Cistercian convent of St. Mary in Rosenthal is designated as a monument zone in Kerzenheim-Rosenthalerhof. The former monastery church is a ruin: construction began in 1241, and it was consecrated in 1261. The construction date and the consecration mark two distinct historical milestones. A model of the former monastery is on display in the museum in the monastery’s “Nassauer Sälchen.” Visitors can also look inside the chapter house, where the nuns once gathered. The model draws attention to the former monastery as a complex, while the chapter house offers a glimpse of a space used for communal life at the time.

The free-to-download “Digiwalk” audio guide app is available for the monastery ruins and presents the history of the monastery. The ruins are considered a special place. Check both the app’s availability and the visiting conditions at the ruins in advance.

Half-timbered houses and the church in the townscape

There are cultural points of interest beyond the monastery too: Kerzenheim’s preserved half-timbered houses are considered interesting to tourists. An octagonal church in the town center is also of tourist interest. These features offer different architectural highlights: the focus is on the half-timbered construction of several houses in one case, and the distinctive shape of a single church building in the other. The townscape thus stands out as a point of interest in its own right, alongside the monastery’s history.

Digital activities at the monastery

Two smartphone rallies can be played at Rosenthal Monastery: a family version and a simpler version for children aged six and up. The two names distinguish the versions; the age recommendation applies specifically to the simpler one. Together with the audio guide, these offer different digital formats focused on the monastery’s history. As app availability may change, check in advance whether the app you want is available.

Hiking trails and getting your bearings

The information board at Rosenthaler Weiher is a starting point for several hiking trails. The parking lot in the center of Rosenthal is a starting point for the Rosenweg and is near the monastery ruins. The two references serve different navigational purposes: the board points to several hiking trails, while the parking lot is a starting point for the Rosenweg. Parking rules may change, so check the current situation before setting out.

The outer Rosenweg runs around Rosenthal, a district of Kerzenheim, through the Palatinate Forest. Its route includes narrow, easy-to-walk paths as well as wider forest trails. If you include this route in your plans, you can take both types of paths into account when imagining the route.
