Obermoschel: Old Town, Wine Trails and Hiking Routes
Accommodation in Obermoschel
Obermoschel combines historic buildings with a history of viticulture and routes for hiking and cycling. If you choose the town as your destination, you can tailor your stay to different interests: a walk through the old town takes you past restored buildings, while the wine trail and local hiking routes reveal other sides of the town.
Old Town and Mining History
The town hall was built around 1510. The Ratskeller, described as the town’s oldest inn, is right next door. The Petersturm is the only surviving tower of the town wall; it is dated to the 14th or 15th century. On a walk through the old town, you’ll pass carefully restored historic buildings that tell the story of Obermoschel’s development. The Schuck’sche Haus is another notable building: it is considered a classic Renaissance monument.
Another building with a special connection to the town’s history is the Polnischer Hof. Its foundation stone was laid by the steward of Landsberg Castle. For centuries, Obermoschel was shaped by cinnabar mining for mercury smelting; historic silver mining is also part of the town’s history. Sights include mercury mines, considered the place where the minerals Moschellandsbergite and Moschelit were discovered. The North Palatinate Radio Museum is also located on the market square. A model railway covering more than 150 square metres is housed in the beer hall of the former Vetter brewery.
Wine Trail and Routes Around Obermoschel
Local recreational options include the Geo-Cultural Trail, the wine trail, the wind trail, an extensive network of hiking routes and cycling routes. The wine trail combines viticulture with information: signs explain the age and origins of different grape varieties. At the same time, the route runs from Obermoschel to the vineyards above Niedermoschel and back. At Seelberg, it passes directly by the historic vineyard hut, which stands above the town in a scenic location.
The vineyards themselves also shape the local character. The vines grow mostly on steep, difficult-to-cultivate slopes with volcanic slate soils, which contribute to the distinctive character of the wines. Wine has been grown in Obermoschel since ancient times. If you’re interested in this side of the town, the wine trail offers a themed route; the wind trail and the Geo-Cultural Trail focus on other subjects. Obermoschel is also listed as a destination on the Palatinate High Trail, which is a long-distance trail divided into stages. The route leads to Obermoschel, and the old town is listed as a stage destination.
By Bike, Bus or for an Event
The Alte Welt cycling route around Rockenhausen reaches Obermoschel via the Moscheltal cycle path. Along the way, it passes through Waldgrehweiler, Finkenbach-Gersweiler, Schiersfeld and Sitters, among other places. Another useful point of reference is the Obermoschel Mitte bus stop: it is served several times a day by route 914, which connects Alsenz, MĂĽnsterappel, Gaugrehweiler and Rockenhausen. Check the timetable before travelling, as details may change.
Historic jousting tournaments are held every year at Landsberg Castle above the town. If you’d like to plan your trip around one, check the event dates in advance. This will help you plan a stay that combines attending an event with exploring the town’s history, according to the time you have available, while still leaving room for the other routes and sights.
More Leisure Options
The multi-generational activity area is right beside the Moscheltal cycle path. It includes a water playground, a volleyball court, a basketball hoop, a table tennis table, a barbecue area, a nest swing, a climbing frame and a growing willow maze. The area is intended for year-round use; the water playground is intended for use in spring and summer. This makes it different from the routes, which focus on exercise through the vineyards or on the town’s history.
Which of these themes matters to you depends on how you’d like to spend your stay in Obermoschel.
