Dasburg: Hiking Trails, Castle Ruins and Local History
Accommodation in Dasburg
Hiking trails and local history offer different ways to shape a stay in Dasburg. Nature Park SĂĽdeifel Hiking Trail No. 8 leads through the town and along the Our Valley; an audio tour and historic sights also explore topics related to Dasburg and its castle. You can plan your trip around what interests you most: a circular hike, the landscape along the Our, or local history.
Hiking along the Our
Nature Park SĂĽdeifel Hiking Trail No. 8 is a moderately difficult circular route covering 10.7 kilometres. The start and finish are in the centre of Dasburg. The trail passes through the winding Our Valley and returns to Dasburg via wooded slopes. Highlights include the ruins of Dasburg Castle, with views of the Our Valley, and a depiction of the town as a historic centre of craftsmanship. Its length, circular route and stated difficulty give the trail a clear profile.
Hiking Trail No. 9 offers a different focus: it follows the border river Our, running close to the riverbank for about half the route and halfway up the slope for the other half. The routes described therefore differ mainly in how they relate to the landscape: No. 8 focuses on the circular route, valley and wooded slopes, while No. 9 follows the changing course of the Our. Another option is the “From Grey to Green” hiking trail. It starts in the Eifel town of Dasburg on the Our and follows the former Westwall, built during the Nazi era.
Near Hiking Trail No. 8 are the bunker trail in the Our Valley and the RellesmĂĽhle mill with its fish ladder. Both add specific points of interest along the route, but they are not part of Circular Trail No. 8.
Dasburg Castle and history
The audio tour through the town centre and castle grounds is a short route with ten stops. Visitors can hear entertaining information about the eventful history of the town and castle. The tour connects two places that also feature in the hiking experience: the historic town centre and the castle ruins. A walk along the outer wall of Dasburg Castle is also worth seeing.
Dasburg is also connected with historic buildings beyond the region: the municipality belongs to the Route Gottfried von Bouillon association. The association aims to introduce the public to historic buildings in the border region of Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Membership places Dasburg within a cross-border cultural heritage network.
Another local history topic is the Plague Chapel. The altarpiece probably dates from the 17th century. A 20-centimetre-tall Late Gothic wooden Madonna stands in a glass display case. According to a local legend, a wood-carved statue of the Virgin Mary was found on the rock three times before the chapel was built there. The estimated date of the altarpiece and the story handed down as a legend are different kinds of evidence about the chapel’s history.
More things to explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm district
The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers further cultural and educational attractions. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine has a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history. The visitor mine offers one-hour guided tours through the mine, where visitors can learn about ore extraction in Bleialf, from geology to the technology used. Check the current tour times before visiting.
At the Devonium in Waxweiler, complex topics in palaeontology and the study of fossil life are presented in a playful way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker; its underground corridors and rooms contain a military history exhibition. The two attractions have different focuses: fossil life and palaeontology on the one hand, and military history on the other.
The Rittersdorf moated castle, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle has a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine. Check whether the restaurant is open before your trip.
