Echtershausen: Hiking Trails and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Echtershausen
Echtershausen is part of the South Eifel Nature Park and lies on the northwestern arm of a reservoir, on the right bank of the Prüm. In the village center, a slate rock preserves the memory of the Prüm’s former western course around the village. For road travel, county road 71 connects the village southward via Hamm and Biersdorf am See to Bitburg.
Hiking and Choosing a Route
The Stausee-PrĂĽmtal route loops around Echtershausen and passes through open and, in places, dense Eifel forests. From Echtershausen, the Biersdorf reservoir route follows the Willibrordus Trail via Ringelstein; after 3.7 kilometers, it descends to the Bitburg Reservoir. Stage 4 of the Eifelverein Willibrordus Trail runs from Echtershausen to Oberweis and is 15.5 kilometers long. These distances refer to different route options: 3.7 kilometers to the descent to the reservoir on one route, and 15.5 kilometers for the stage to Oberweis. Swimming, diving, and fishing are not permitted at the Bitburg Reservoir.
Historic Buildings and Traces of the Past
The historic monuments inventory dated June 24, 2024, lists the Catholic St. Mary’s Chapel at Hauptstraße 12 as a plastered building dating from 1892, with a roof turret and a later sacristy extension. The crosswise farmhouse at Hauptstraße 6 is also listed. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and has a somewhat later blacksmith’s shop extension. The two buildings thus represent different periods and types of construction.
The inventory also lists two wayside crosses: one stands west of the sunken lane’s entrance into the village and is dated 1778. The other dates from 1770 and stands at the eastern edge of the forest beside the stream that marks the village’s western boundary; its crowning cross is newer. The crosses differ in both location and date. Together with the slate rock in the village center, they offer different points of connection to the history of the village and the river.
Culture in the Bitburg-PrĂĽm District
The wider travel destination of the Bitburg-Prüm District offers more cultural attractions. At the Devonium in Waxweiler, visitors can explore complex topics in paleontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The approximately 700-year-old Rittersdorf moated castle has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a striking picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. On one-hour guided tours at the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine, you can learn about ore mining, from geology to applied technology. The visitor mine also has a mining trail with numerous information panels on the area’s mining history. Check the current tour dates before your trip. In the Bitburg-Prüm District, the Westwall Museum presents a military history exhibition on three accessible levels of a bunker.
