Giesdorf lies on the L5 between Schönecken and Rommersheim. Two main themes go hand in hand when planning a trip: the nature of the Schönecker Schweiz, whose nature reserve includes parts of Giesdorf’s municipal area, and the historic buildings in the village. Cycling and hiking routes offer further ways to include the Schönecker Schweiz in a tour.

Nature in the Schönecker Schweiz

Semi-dry grasslands rich in orchids and juniper in the Schönecker Schweiz provide a habitat for plants and animals that thrive in warm, dry conditions. The area is home to almost the entire butterfly community characteristic of semi-dry grasslands in the Eifel. The focus here is therefore on both special habitats and the diversity of butterflies. In the valley of the Schönecker Schweiz, a botanical nature trail with information panels leads visitors through the plant life. It complements the view of the habitats with an explanatory perspective.

Historic Buildings in Giesdorf

A Quereinhaus (a house and farm building under one roof) dating from 1891 stands at Hauptstraße 4. The Hakenhöfe (hook-shaped farmsteads) at the junction of Nimsweg and Hauptstraße probably date back to a farm division in the first half of the 19th century. The branch chapel of St. Apollinaris is at Hauptstraße 25. Its foundation stone was laid in 1933; a wooden statue of Saint Apollinaris stands in the altar niche. These buildings offer different points of interest: a house with a documented date, farmsteads with a probable history of origin, and a chapel with a recorded foundation-stone date. Anyone interested in local history will find several concrete points of connection here.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

The Nims Cycle Route is a moderately difficult, 64.4-kilometre cycling route from Weinsheim near Prüm to Irrel Mill. Its northern section runs from Weinsheim through the Schönecker Schweiz to Bitburg; steeper climbs and descents are part of the route’s character there. The Schönecken Panorama Trail is a loop through the Schönecker Schweiz nature reserve and the Altburgtal valley. The Prümer Land Tour Route 2 also forms a loop through the nature reserve.

Unlike these routes, the Schneifel Trail is a day hike from Prüm to Schönecken through the Schönecker Schweiz. The routes can thus be distinguished by activity and layout: a cycling route with specified endpoints, loop trails, and a day hike between two towns. When planning, it is also important to consider whether you are looking for a cycling tour or a hike. Check the latest route details before setting out.
