Gondorf: Eifelpark and Local History
Accommodation in Gondorf
Gondorf lies east of Bitburg between the Kyll River and the B 50. A natural ridge protects the town from cold northerly and easterly winds. Local history and Eifelpark Gondorf, with its leisure and wildlife park attractions, offer two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.
Eifelpark Gondorf: Rides and Wildlife
Eifelpark Gondorf combines an amusement park with a wildlife park and features more than 60 attractions. These include rides, opportunities to observe animals, and adventure and themed playgrounds. The Eifel-Coaster summer toboggan run is almost 1,000 meters long and reaches speeds of up to 40 km/h. Pirate Island has a 360-meter track, with drops from heights of up to 14 meters. These details highlight different features of the two rides: length and speed for the coaster, and track length and drop height for Pirate Island.
At the wildlife park, you can observe deer, roe deer, brown bears, lynxes, meerkats, wallabies and other wild animals at close range. The Bear Gorge is a 6,500-square-meter brown bear enclosure. The program also includes animal feedings with commentary from animal keepers. Rides, wildlife viewing and play areas can thus be considered distinct aspects of what the park offers.
Getting Around and Facilities
Eifelpark’s main entrance is in the valley on Bärenallee. There is ample free parking at the park, and leashed dogs are welcome. The paths are wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located at the main entrance. Wheelchair users can also ride the Rondello carousel. Attractions, programs, visitor rules and facilities may change. Check the park’s latest information before your visit.
Traces from Different Eras
A Frankish burial ground and pottery finds from the 2nd and 3rd centuries point to earlier settlement in Gondorf. The first documented mention is a separate milestone: in 1226, the name “Guendurf” appears in a document. Before the French period, Gondorf was partly assigned to the provostry of Bitburg and partly subject to the lordship of Dudeldorf in the Duchy of Luxembourg. Its historical affiliations were therefore divided. The Catholic branch church of St. Wendelin was built from 1846 to 1850. Together, the finds, the written mention and the church building provide different points in time from which to explore the town.
More Places to Explore in the Bitburg-PrĂĽm District
The wider destination of the Bitburg-PrĂĽm district offers further cultural and historical topics. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents connections in paleontology and the scientific study of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible levels of a bunker; underground passages and rooms contain a military history exhibition. The approximately 700-year-old Rittersdorf moated castle has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a glimpse of late medieval and modern Renaissance residential culture. These examples complement the picture of Gondorf with distinct themes from the wider destination.
