In Habscheid, historic routes, cultural monuments and the landscape take centre stage. The Emischjass tells the story of a former transport route, while the parish church, mill and crosses offer different examples of historic architecture. The Eifel Viewpoint “Auf dem Köpfchen” adds sweeping views across valleys and landscapes. If you are planning a stay, you can explore Habscheid through these different interests: the history of its routes, historic architecture or scenic views.

The Emischjass and the history of its routes

The Emischjass is a deep ravine between trees and hedges. It was formed by wagon traffic and a natural watercourse that flows towards the Bierbach. This brings together a distinctive landscape feature and the route’s former use as a transport link. The Emischjass was once a main route between Lichtenborn, Kesfeld and Habscheid; it was also known as the Roman Road or Military Road. These names reflect the route’s historical context.

The Prüm–St. Vith cycle route, which passes through the locality of Habscheider Mühle, offers a different perspective on travelling through the area. Check the local signs before setting out. The former main route of the Emischjass and the named cycle route represent different connections: one was a former link between three places, while the other is a cycle route through the locality of Habscheider Mühle.

Cultural monuments in Habscheid

The parish church of St. Lucia in Habscheid is a protected cultural monument. The south walls of the nave and choir, as well as the three-sided choir end, date from no later than the 15th century. These dates make specific parts of the church tangible points of historical reference.

Two other cultural monuments showcase different types of crosses. The wayside cross at Hauptstraße 18 is a post-Baroque shaft cross dating from 1806. The cross at the junction of Hauptstraße and Neustraße is the torso of a late Gothic niche cross dating from 1554. Together, the monuments offer a comparison between a shaft cross and the torso of a niche cross, with clearly different forms and dates.

Northeast of Habscheid lies Habscheider Mühle, an impressive three-winged complex dating from the mid-19th century and a cultural monument. At the mill, the Hollbach flows into the Alfbach, a right-bank tributary of the Prüm. Here, a striking ensemble of buildings meets a specific point along the river.

Views across valleys and landscapes

The Eifel Viewpoint “Auf dem Köpfchen” in Habscheid offers a panorama stretching from the Our Valley across the Alfbach Valley to the Schneifel, and onwards across the Prüm Valley and Prüm Limestone Basin to the Arzfeld collective municipality. The views also include villages, lakes, river valleys, hedgerow landscapes, heathland and moors. The viewpoint brings together named valleys and a variety of landscape types. If you are making landscapes the focus of your trip, the Prüm region also has seven Eifel viewpoints, each with its own view.
