Halsdorf is situated on a high plateau between the Enz and Prüm rivers. Two specific highlights come together here when choosing a travel destination: a route with views over the Enz Valley and several reminders of the village’s history. There are also offerings related to a distillery.

Landscape and the Kleine Wacholderrunde trail

The Bitburger LandGang – Kleine Wacholderrunde starts on Schulstraße, by the community centre in Halsdorf. As starting points and access arrangements can change, check the local information about the route before you travel. The path runs along the edge of a forest and offers views of the fields and meadows of the Enz Valley. The combination of the forest edge and valley views shapes the landscape. Remains of former juniper hedges have also been preserved along the path; landscape features of this kind can change over time. A bench along the way offers a chance to enjoy a picnic with panoramic views over the Enz Valley. If you are planning to stop there, check the condition of the bench and the local conditions before your visit.

Architectural history in the village

The earliest documented form of the village’s name is Haltzdorf, dated to 1501. Two listed farmsteads share the same date, 1786, but display different features recorded in historical sources: the Einhaus at Hauptstraße 13 has a preserved stable wing with haylofts and a cellar built into the slope; the Streckhof at Schulstraße 4 was extended later. The branch church of St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier is also one of Halsdorf’s listed buildings: the hall church with a roof turret is dated to 1778. The former schoolhouse at Hohlweg 4 dates from 1852 and is distinguished by its striking façade. North of Halsdorf, in the direction of Olsdorf, stands a wayside cross with a relief-decorated shaft from 1777. The dates link these buildings to different periods; at the two farmsteads, you can also compare the different architectural features that have been preserved.

Visitor experiences and regional themes

At the Heck distillery in Halsdorf, home-distilled fruit brandy is part of the visitor offering. Check before your visit whether this offering is currently available. At the Norbert Heck distillery, a guided tour introduces visitors to the production of Eifel schnapps and brandies. A tasting includes ten different brandies and liqueurs, as well as savoury snacks and mineral water. Confirm the availability of the tour and the current tasting selection in advance.

The wider Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm destination has other distinct thematic attractions. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and fossil life in an engaging, hands-on way. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine includes a mining trail with numerous information boards on the area’s mining history. The Westwall Museum is housed across three accessible levels of a bunker and presents a military history exhibition in underground corridors and rooms. The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a glimpse of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. Alongside Halsdorf’s local history, the Eifelkreis therefore offers themes including palaeontology, mining and military history, as well as historic domestic culture.
