In Hosten, hiking and cycling routes meet traces of local history. The village lies on the edge of the Kylltal Buntsandstein Route; the Kyll Valley Cycle Route runs through the Kyll Valley, far below the settlement. The church, a wayside cross and traces of sandstone quarrying also offer distinctive places to visit during your stay.

Hiking and Cycling Around Hosten

Hosten lies on the edge of the Kylltal Buntsandstein Route. Hikers from elsewhere stop here for a break when travelling along the route. A well-developed network of paths around the village is suitable for hiking and cycling, complementing these route connections with further ways to explore the surrounding area.

The Kyll Valley Cycle Route passes Hosten in the Kyll Valley, far below the settlement. The routes mentioned therefore also differ in their location: Hosten is on the edge of the Buntsandstein Route, while the cycle route runs down in the valley. When planning your time outdoors, you can take this geographical distinction into account alongside the activity itself.

Local History and the Church

Hosten’s history dates back to the 13th century: the village began as an estate belonging to Trier’s St. Maximin Abbey. A hunting lodge associated with Count Kesselstatt was added later. The progression from abbey estate to the hunting lodge added at a later date offers a glimpse into the settlement’s early history without implying that the two developments took place at the same time.

A notable landmark is the branch church of St. Joseph. Seven of its windows depict the Seven Joys of Mary. The stained-glass windows are also noteworthy: their design was modelled on an original by a Flemish artist. The number of windows, their religious theme and the artistic model bring together different aspects of the church’s furnishings during a visit.

Sandstone, a Wayside Cross and Other Traces

Several sandstone quarries lie on Hosten’s wooded slopes towards the Kyll Valley. The village’s history is also connected with nearby quarries where millstones were made.
