Nature and leisure in Körperich
The South Eifel Nature Park has almost 940 kilometers of hiking trails, as well as cycling routes. The network of trails covers the nature park as a whole. One specific hiking route mentioned is circular trail 43, which includes the Oven and Iron Museum in Hüttingen and its museum café, the Ofenstube. The route combines exercise with a cultural and historical museum visit.
The Körperich adventure outdoor pool has swimming, non-swimmer and toddler pools, slides, a climbing wall and a diving tower. There is also a beach volleyball court and well-maintained sunbathing lawns for relaxing. Facilities range from swimming and sliding to climbing, jumping and a quieter break on the lawn. Some facilities may be temporarily unavailable; check which attractions are currently open before your visit.
An adjacent campsite is part of the outdoor pool complex. There is also a youth camping site with a barbecue shelter. If you would like to combine your trip with swimming or camping, you can enjoy both as part of the local leisure activities.
Castle, church and royal oak
Kewenig Castle is a historic castle that offers insights into regional history. Concerts and exhibition openings are held there in summer, while a Christmas market is a winter tradition. The seasonal program may change. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates in advance.
The Catholic parish church of St. Hubertus brings together different construction periods: its foundations date from the Middle Ages, while the west tower and choir were built in the neoclassical style in 1826. This makes it easy to distinguish the medieval foundations from the later 19th-century additions.
The royal oak is designated a natural monument. The area immediately around the tree is cordoned off because of the risk of branches breaking off during storms. As access restrictions may change depending on forestry and safety conditions, check the situation before your visit.
More places to explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm
The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers more cultural and historical attractions. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine includes a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area's mining history. One-hour guided tours of the mine explain ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Take seasonal opening information into account when planning your visit.
The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in paleontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging, hands-on way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker; its underground corridors and rooms feature a military history exhibition. The two attractions have different focuses: one on fossil life, the other on military history.
Rittersdorf Moated Castle is another destination in Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm. It is around 700 years old, has been preserved almost unchanged, and offers a glimpse of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. The castle houses a privately run restaurant serving refined country cuisine. Check before your trip whether the restaurant is open.
