Zweifelscheid: Cycling Path and Railway History
Accommodation in Zweifelscheid
Zweifelscheid lies in the upper Enz Valley, in a wooded low-mountain landscape. The landscape and railway history reveal two different sides of the town.
Following the former railway line
A former railway line runs through Zweifelscheid and has been converted into a cycling and hiking trail. Follow the route and you will reach the Aqua fun leisure pool after about 2 km. This gives the route not only two ways to get around, but also a specific destination. The approximate two-kilometre distance refers to the route to the leisure pool and provides a guide for this section.
Recreation area at the former railway station
A recreation area for hikers and visitors is located on the site of the former railway station. Its facilities include a football pitch, a playground and a barbecue area. These offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors: football, play and barbecuing all come together in the same recreation area. If you plan to visit the area, check the condition of the individual facilities before your visit.
The railway in the town’s history
Zweifelscheid’s railway history connects the construction of the railway with its later use during the building of the Westwall. The railway was built in 1907; later, during construction of the Westwall, it served as an important transshipment station. The railway’s construction and its later role as a transshipment station therefore belong to different periods in the town’s history. For travellers interested in historical context, this sequence is a distinct point of interest alongside the converted trail and recreation area at the former railway station.
More to explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm
The wider travel destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers visitors themes including mining, palaeontology, military history and historic domestic culture. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine has a mining trail with numerous information panels on the area’s mining history. Hour-long guided tours through the mine explain ore extraction in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. Check the seasonal operating information for the tours before your visit.
The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in a fun, accessible way. The Westwall Museum offers a different historical focus: housed across three accessible floors of a bunker, it features a military history exhibition in underground passages and rooms. The two museums therefore have different subjects: one focuses on fossil life and palaeontology, the other on military history.
The Rittersdorf moated castle, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built. It offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether the restaurant is open.
