Neuheilenbach brings together several layers of history: from Roman cremation burials and sandstone working to Baroque crosses and religious buildings from the 20th century. A hiking trail above the village and an e-bike charging station add opportunities for outdoor activities.

Local History from Founding to Sandstone Working

Neuheilenbach was founded around 1828 by people from Heilenbach who were planning to emigrate and were locally known as “Brazilians.” The village was first mentioned under its present name in 1831. The two dates mark different stages: 1828 is the approximate founding date, while 1831 is the first mention under the present village name. Until the mid-20th century, sandstone working played a major role in shaping Neuheilenbach’s economic structure. This means that an important economic influence on the village continued beyond its founding period.

Northeast of Neuheilenbach, a Roman cremation burial ground comprised 20 stone cist graves. The burials are among the area’s historic traces and add to the picture of the much more recent periods of local history.

Crosses, Chapel and Subsidiary Church

A richly sculpted Baroque shaft cross stands on Bergstraße in Neuheilenbach and is dated 1772. A Baroque shaft cross near Hauptstraße 3 dates from the 18th century. The cross on Bergstraße is therefore dated more precisely than the one near Hauptstraße 3: a specific year is given for one, and a century for the other.

The Marien Chapel was built in 1964 and dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The present subsidiary church was consecrated in 1967. These dates supplement the older dates of the crosses with construction and consecration years from the 20th century.

Hiking Trail, Weather Radar and E-Bikes

A hiking trail runs above Neuheilenbach between Neuheilenbach and Neidenbach. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The weather radar station in Neuheilenbach was built in 1998 and is one of 17 radar sites nationwide. The 32-metre-high tower is visible from several kilometres away; visibility and surroundings can change.
